lxxwj
What fuzzes do you guys like best? Which ones sound the best on bass? Personally, I'm really liking the Woolly Mammoth. Trying to find that "Hysteria" tone.. Edited January 26, 2012 by lxxwj
paul_5
Good luck to you; trying to find the "Hysteria" tone opens up quite a can of worms. Bass signal gets split 3 ways: reissue Russian big muffs (2 of) and an Animato (again, good luck) and onto discontinued Marshall bass heads... lxxwj
Already transcribed his rack and amp setup! You could say I'm obsessed. After listening to it live and demos of the animato and russian, I'm thinking it's mostly the Russian. But back to the main question: Favorite fuzz pedals? Anyone? On a side note, I think I've fallen in love with the Russian! Such amazing tone! *drool* Edited January 26, 2012 by lxxwj

Pob
Check the Wren and Cuff stuff - I've got a Tri Pie 70 which is utterly amazing, and borrowing a Pickle Pie B at the moment. I have to say I prefer the Tri Pie but they're both flipping awesome. Just acquired a Dark Driving too which is fuzzy in a gentle way. Also very pleasing. dannybuoy
I found the SFX Micro Fuzz great for Muse tones too, it's like a synthier raspier muff sound. I think the new MXR bass fuzz coming out is a Tonebender clone also like the Micro Fuzz. Edited January 26, 2012 by dannybuoy
phil.i.stein
take a good long look at Mr.Excane's demos (scroll down a bit......). i'm after a Depth Charge, myself, but no luck so far. i've tried many, some gated, some not. depends what you like, smooth and furry, or aggressive and hairy ? link - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/138296-my-pedal-demo-video-collection-free-pedal-giveaway/ Edited January 26, 2012 by phil.i.stein

pantherairsoft
I have settled on and use 2... For gated, aggressive, biting and synthy I use a ZVEX Mastotron. It's Similar to the Mammoth, but with a few 'sharper' to al characteristics and works great with an Active bass. For smooth, high gain, wall of noise & almost guitar like I use a Myrtle Pedals Corvid Fuzz. It's a clone of a Jumbo Tone Bender, with the addition of a passive tone stack and a mid-scoop switch. Works great on bass, and while it is a little noisy of it isn't right at the start of the chain, the noise is part of its character and fits my sound great. I've actually had 2 of these, regretted trading the 1st one on BC so had a 2nd built!
Truckstop
Aw, you're joking?! I had the Corvid for sale not so long ago! Well, Im glad no-one bought it though because it is an amazing fuzz. Nice soft warmth all the way to a badgers face full of wasps. Truckstop
pantherairsoft
I believe your Corvid was mine, yeah? It is great. The one you have is exactly the same, except Hugh now puts the mid scoop switch on, but effectively still sounds the same. And yes - keep hold, it's awesome! lxxwj
Oh, anyone have any idea what fuzz would work nicely on that bit in Schism with the pitch bend? I'm guessing it's a tone-bender, from looking at his gear.
deej
I just picked myself up an Earthquaker Devices Hoof fuzz (again) going in a complete circle from last year. I dont like clean blends with fuzzes, and ive never gotten on with a gated fuzz as I like a big open sound. The Hoof just fits with what I want, now I can fanny about trying to find a distortion I like!
Ghost_Bass
I have the Pickle Pie B and it's very good, the best i had but i'm liking the looks of the new MXR too... damm GAS!!!

I use Whammy/Delay/Rat/flange but at the next gig I am going to try it out with the EH bass big muff pi - I have also used the Marshall guvnor, and that sounded good for schism! Its helped me bundles! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/tool-tone-fx-sticky-thread-ver-1-a-620296/ His dirty channel goes to a Proco Turbo Rat, then a Boss GEB-7, then a Prescription Electronics Depth Charge, then out to the amp. The Turbo Rat and GEB-7 (boost low-mids and highs) are always on, the Depth Charge is used only for the distorted intro to "Flood" in concert. His main channel then follows this path: Guyatone VT-X Tremolo (used in "Lost Keys" and "Right in Two") Digitech Bass Whammy (used in "Eulogy", "Third Eye", "Schism", "Ticks & Leeches", "Lateralus", "Disposition", "Vicarious", "The Pot" and "Right in Two") Tech 21 Sansamp GT-2 (used for all distortions on Aenima and Lateralus, as well as on "Vicarious", "The Pot" and "Lost Keys") Boss CE-5 (used in many songs, most obviously used in "H.", "jimmy" and "No Quarter") Boss BF-2 (used in "Forty-Six & 2", "Pushit", "Schism", "Lateralus" and "Jambi") Boss DD-3/6 (used in "Pushit", "Third Eye", "Schism", "Disposition", "Jambi") Guyatone BR-2 (used in "The Pot" and "Rosetta Stoned") Colorsound Tonebender (used in "Jambi" only, as far as I am aware) Foxx Fuzz/Wah (used in "The Pot" live; in the studio, it was another unverified wah) Justin also has a second, smaller board that is placed close to his amp that he uses for "Lost Keys". This board contains a second Sansamp GT-2, Guyatone VT-X Tremolo and Boss GEB-7. He places it next to his amp so he can generate the necessary feedback while turning the tremolo on and off. GarethFlatlands
Found this interview:- http://www.myspace.com/chris_ford/blog/290802854 About halfway down and following on from the previous question about the sound on 'Lost Keys' "What's the distortion that's always on? The TurboRAT. When I play live, one cab has some distortion, and the other one's very clean. The SansAmp is one of my overdriven distortions, the other is the Colorsound Tonebender Fuzz. I have to have that on now when we do the song live, and I have to be standing in exactly the right spot to get that effect."
