Sean
I've just edited rule 1 so it covers import duty/charges and also clarifies that delivery is not included in the £200 :-)
Bigwan
Thanks for the offer. I had an ATK400 for a while and it sounded glorious but the neck was way too chunky for me :-(
Pity... I wonder how much a neck reshape would cost? Probably more than you would have spare. Yamaha is a good bet - one of the BBN, BBG or BB series. Or what about Aria Pro II? They're a good solid bass, and the 4 string necks are nice and slim. Jerry_B
More bang for the buck going for older BB models, either of the BB200 or BB300 on eBay at the moment would do a better job. If the OP goes for a big-name company, such as Yamaha, he should be looking at the bottom of the range from the late 70s all the way through the 80s. Either that or the lesser factories/makes of the day, like Columbus, Cimar (as mentioned), Kay, etc.
Maybe, but then there's always the chance that the OP might end up with a duff one, for which money has to be spent to revamp it. That may effect the budget

BigRedX
What are you playing at the moment? If you have to be happy with your challenge bass then knowing what you're currently playing is going to be a factor. Also does you budget include a decent set up and time taken to make any mods? LawrenceH
Always available under £200, made in Japan, gotoh hardware, P/J, superbly balanced and well under 10lb...SGC Nanyo Bass Collection FTW! I think the wood on the translucent finishes is sen rather than swamp ash but this is true of a lot of Jap instruments (looks identical). Not sure about the solid bodies but at least some were alder. Mornats
Know anything else that comes with a Sen body, my JV has one and the old cimar jazz I had had one and they sounded amazing. Man I wish i still had that bass- only cost me £70, new bridge and it was so so good. sold it to a mate- wish I wasn't so nice
Japanese Bass Collections (the SGC Nanyo ones) had Japanese Sen bodies. Very lightweight and lovely basses. I got my 5-string for £165 off Ebay and my fretless for £200 (excluding delivery for both) so they're worth checking out.
