leftyhook
true...... the thread is getting a response. My flippancy probably stems from days gone by when coming across a left-handed bass was as rare as hen's teeth, so we had to take anything, or play upside down etc. as you were chaps! Did a couple of 'unplugged' gigs with two other lefties on guitars. One had a left-handed guitar, one played a right-handed guitar upside down but still strung as a right hander (ie with the thinnest string nearest the ceiling) and the strap button on the smaller horn (al la Hendrix) and I played normally. Despite all being lefties none of us could play each others instruments standing up..
ead
If you need any assistance I can get to Manchester very easily - only 12 miles away. PM me if you require any collection service/short term storage. I work in Warrington a little bit closer for you and would be happy to meet up down the M6 a bit if that would help... I've also just found out that I might be going to Japan at the end of this month that could be a gamechanger, they have lots of old Japanese instruments available (funnily enough)
twentyhertz
I've got two possible suggestions here... I've got a 1996 Korean Precision, and I believe it's meant to have an Alder body. It was shagged when I got it for £40 off a drummer I know, but I've stuck some decent pickups in it (SD 1/4 lb'ers), replaced some rusty hardware, and it's not too shabby now. Next option, I've got a Yamaha BB404... as far as I can tell, it would fit most of your requirements, except that I have no idea where they were manufactured. It's got a fairly standard fender-esque shape with two Jazz pickups and passive electronics. From around the same era, there was also the BB604 which was similar with two active soapbar pickups and the corresponding BB405 and maybe 605 5-string versions. A guy I knew had a BB405 with a fancy flamed maple top and goldie lookin' hardware, but my BB404 was a lot less blinged, with a sort of satin natural finish. I believe it also came in a metallic blue, black and a red/black sunburst finish. The natural finish looks a bit prettier, but it's pretty soft - I'd go for one of the painted finishes for a bit of extra hard-wearing quality. (This is the fancy BB405 I was on about) (And this is my BB404)
Sean
Tell me more about the Korean P, do you have pictures? Is it a Squier? I'm hoping to be sorted on this challenge today but Might need a plan b in case.
Bass_man219
I picked up an ibanez btb 5 string for around £200 if that doesn't breach regulations

I had to rebadge it as a Fender after having to sand most of the finish from the neck and headstock, but yup, Korean Squier. It's a pretty nice instrument too, reassuringly heavy ;-) can't think of any pictures I might have, I could maybe snap a few if you'd like? EskimoBassist
Just read through all this, best of luck finding a bass. I'm sure I'll have a go at something like this myself at some point, sounds like good fun.

The Dark Lord
What's wrong with China. Everything we buy comes from there. They probably have higher prduction standards than UK or EU sourced products.

If you mean, why were basses built in China eliminated from the challenge, then the answer is simple. It was because it is too easy to find a bass manufactured in China (or Taiwan, or Indonesia) that fulfills the other criteria. If Chinese-made basses had been allowed, it would not have been a challenge but a simple purchasing exercise.

[/quote] Just for you (and the rest of Basschat) I've commissioned some professional photographs of the Yamaha BB400S that I bought to complete this challenge. A friend of mine is a photographer and wanted some practise on something different and I half-jokingly said he could photograph my bass collection if he wanted something different to do and he lept at the chance so hopefully by the end of the week we should have some £200 Challenge Bass Porn. Hopefully I'll photos of my entire BB family too but this does not mean that I'll be joining one of the Talkbass-style clubs
