The best slap bass ive ever seen..

As far as Marcus' tone is concerned I have never had a problem with it. I saw him live during his EBS period and his tone was monstrous. I personally feel that it is pointless for us all to criticise any player's tone in an unaccompanied setting regardless of equipment, technique etc. This doesn't make sense to me as it what the bass sounds like in a band context which is important, surely.

I feel that Marcus is definitely one of the more musical purveyors of the slap technique and has been responsible for some truly awe inspiring performances including his recordings of Teen Town and What is Hip. However lket's not forget that he is one of the all time great musicians. He plays many other instruments including bass Clarinet, piano, drums, and double bass very well, as well as being able to read and write music, produce in the studio and conduct orchestras. Have a listen to the following track off Wayne Shorter's High Life CD, and bear in mind this line was sight read from notation provided by Wayne Shorter who wrote the line out note for note. Fantastic!! (p.s try to listen through headphones to get the best effect, his tone is lovely IMHO).

Love MM with Luther - awesome. But can't stand MM when he does gentle songs that consist entirely of solo slapping. Just hideous.

The way I look at it, slapping is about emphasising rhythm. So when Mark King starts thrashing away with Phil Gould on the Live At Wembley vid, that all makes sense.

When Marcus starts doing this

I feel despair.

Kind of liked that clip by Prime but he needs to get a better sound. More warmth and more hi-fi.

Can't watch the clip at work but the initials say it all for me, and I wholeheartedly agree with the above. MK drives the band; it's all about driving rhythm. MM? Just lifeless to me, although I realise others have different opinions. I can't stand his tone either. To me it sounds like someone hitting railway tracks with a sledghammer a long way away. There's nothing supple, warm, growly or even nicely twangy about it, which are things I like in a tone. In fact this is something I've been thinking a lot about recently, how some players' tone just puts me off them, regardless of what they play. Not that I like his music either, mind!

New here but this is my kinda thread. Agree about MM's sound but I still love most of his work. MK is initially what got me into bass and his music is some of the most fun to play. Other than those mentioned (and Louis Johnson) my favourites:

Larry Graham - gotta love the energy

Victor Wooten (initially wasn't a fan because it seems over the top)

Also love this

Do you mean that he appears on Everyone hates chris or he was the composer for the show?
Yes, he did compose the music, but I've also seen one episode where he actually appears in a cameo role.

Larry Graham's tone and feel kicks MM's a**e for me, way more guts to the sound.
I like the MM Fender sig though, and the man himself comes across as pretty cool. I also like his playing with Herbie Hancock on the live vids on youtube.

I also like MM, but Larry Graham is the man! Check this video and the other ones from the same VHS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipjTvRe7-Zg

Waaaay back in the mists of time, before I discovered bass, one of my favourite tracks was from Bryan Ferry's Bete Noire album, entitled "Kiss and Tell"
Upon reviewing this track, I found a bass tone to die for, a laid-back but punchy groove with tidy technique...
Oh and a bass credit for one Marcus Miller...
Super player.

I thought that Kiss and Tell was played by Guy Pratt... (he mentions it in his book how he came up with the riff)

One of my favourite Miller-vids, the stamina blows me away

BTW, slightly off topic but this is the best non-Jaydee tone he ever got IMHO.

Eden and Alembic. Who'd have thought, eh?
For Mark King, that sounds pretty grim. No top end at all; the slap has no punch and the fingerstyle sounds very muddy. I usually love his Alembic sound but it's not a patch on the mk1 Kingbass through his Ashdown amps.

Mind you, Mark's worst tone was undoubtedly those dire GB basses he was using on the Ohne Filter dvd. Absolutely no definition or punch whatsoever, they sounded asolutely crap. I'm not surprised he ditched them fairly soon after.

There all up there, but it's all down to tone, what is the perfect slap sound, I'm with bubinga as far as a universal good all round sound going from finger style to slap Miller is the man
I really, really prefer Larry Graham's tone from about 'Stand!' to 'My Radio Sure Sounds Good to Me', great heft to it for Soul Train-style booty shaking. Miller's sound is just so anodyne in comparison.
