discreet Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 What, no MJ? Or are we only including black artists? From 'Off The Wall', 1979. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bwjT8wLenE Quote

Kiwi Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012
If you can do Kool and the Gang then i raise you a Heatwave:
Maybe this should be in the tenuous claims to fame thread.... The original guitarist was Eric Johns Rasmussen. He and his wife moved to NZ in the early 80's and she was my primary school teacher for a few months. They're in Sydney now. He came into class and gave us a talk on playing guitar - both were cool as f***. Another piece of useless trivia... The keyboardist in Heatwave was Rod Temperton who wrote some of the fro-est disco hits. This is despite being from Cleethorpes. Quincy Jones was introduced to him, and Rod ended up writing a number of killer tracks for Michael Jacksons Off The Wall and Thriller albums including Thriller, Rock With You and Off The Wall. Quote

gjones Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 (edited) Ah the days of the groovy basslines. I remember reading musicians magazines around that time and the session drummers and guitarists were always moaning about how boring the recording sessions were. No complaints from the bass players though. Edited January 29, 2012 by gjones Quote
pete.young Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Thank you Clarky, you've made an old man very happy. Bernard's playing on 'Forbidden Lover' is one of his finest moments. It's tabbed in Stu's book, so there goes my Sunday afternoon! I used to think these guys were pretty good too, though it predates most of this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsVsxr-JYBQ As for what we were doing in 1977, I remember driving past a gig somewhere in south Manchester on my way to an irish music session, wondering why there were so many people queuing up to see a band I'd never heard of. The Police. What a stupid name for a band, they'll never catch on, I thought. Quote
I went to see Talking Heads at the Oasis, Swindon in 1978 I think it was... they were supported by a band I had never heard of called Dire Straits. I remember thinking, 'Christ, they're basically an old man's pub-rock band. Why the hell are they supporting the Heads? They'll never get anywhere.' I never tire of being wrong! Quote
