FENDER, Japanese Vintage Series Porn , JV Serial Numbers...

OK, I haven't seen a JV porn thread on here, so thought i'd start one for JV serial number basses.

Here's my matched pair of 1st series export JV Basses, 1962 Precision & 1962 Jazz.

The Jazz is believed to be a prototype, or one of the first, as it has some features not seen on post April '82 models. It also has the earliest known neck date of an export Fender JV Squier, 21st April 1982, and is featured on the 21 frets/JV official website.

Common features on both;

Exact same shaping and contours as the pre-CBS original necks and bodies, original blueprints were used
Large Fender, small 'Squier Series' decal (Only seen on April/early May 1982 models)
'Slab' rosewood fingerboards
Clay style dots
3-Tone sunburst
Reverse, close thread tuners (Only seen on April/May 1982 versions)
Nitro look tortoishell guards (Both are matched and look like cut from same sheet)
Chrome covers

Jazz has individual string mute assembly, and ground wire on top.

They both play and sound amazing, the Jazz is the nicest sounding, and easiest to play bass, and neck i've ever played, without exception!!

Anyway, enough of the anoraky stuff; here's a pic of the pair;

Very nice, love it.

What model is it?, it looks like a '57, but the only ones i've seen have raised 'A' pickup poles, wheras yours look flat??

Fab though, do you know the date and serial number??
it's the '57, JV02479 serial, could be wrong. Not original pups, at some point the previous owner lent it to a mate who decided to stick a set of SD vintage P bass pups in. If I ever see a set of original ones for sale may pick them up but for playing it sounds pretty sweet. The collecting side of it is secondary.
I used to have a jap '57ri which I bought as I wanted one of these. when I first started the idea of having an awesome bass with squier on the headstock appealed to me and wanting to show people's presumptions up. When I first got this I was actually disappointed it said fender on it! :)

Not 100% sure, never thought about it, '82 would have been ash or alder, mine are quite grainy, so i'd guess ash. Here's a pic of the jazz, showing the grain better;

Yeah thats Sen ash. Not real ash so neither ash nor alder really, sounds great though :)

By the way, how do you get the 'big' pics up instead of the smaller thumbnails that most people use??

Thanks for the clarity, i guess Sen Ash is a japanese species of Ash....of sorts??
nope, not related but in guitars looked like our swamp and northern ashes. It's sound apparently is somewhere between ash and alder. I like it.

Happy to join in...

1982 Squier '62 Precision, serial JV20xxx. Jason Lollar pickup. I was living in Cambridge and got a call for a last-minute dep the same night. Lacking a bass, I wandered into the local shop with fingers crossed and found this. I traded them an indifferent Tokai Strat I'd bought for £80. The gig paid £100!

1982 Squier '57 Precision, serial JV15xxx. Aftermarket anodised guard. Found in a shop in Croydon for £200. I once had another of these but it was heavy and had neck issues, so it went. This one is ridiculously light and super loud.

Hahaha...i was just about to start a JV porn thread when i thought hmmm best check there isn't one already - good job i did.
Anyhow bought a 1983 JV Precision about a month ago now and loving it to freakin' bits. I'm a tad confused to what the wood it is, even if the body is original??? - it looks like tiger stripes ish...its pretty anyhow - its also stamped LX in the neck pocket, see bottom picture...have any of you other JV owners got anything like this??? :blink: I'm a bit clueless about these things to be honest.

I've managed to get a reissue bridge (cheers Luke ;) ) as the previous was non standard and i've changed the pickguard as the previous was a bit...well lets just say pepperoni style and knackered. I've also replaced the original Squier 83 pickups for some late 70's DiMarzio's to try them out for a bit and have also fitted some new electrics (big thanks to Kiogon) that have a vintage circuit and some special PIO capacitor thingy - its very good indeed and i recommend Kiogons kits for £25...plus no soldering needed - check on here in B/C ville.

Anyhow the result is astounding!!! I totally prefer the DiMarzio's (so far) to the originals as it is a lot more defined and has a bit more low mids, very hot too...lots of funkput :lol: - but smooth at the same time. Alas do not fear though the original Squier electrics with the raised A string poles on the pickup will be going in a new bitsa P currently under construction.

Why do they raise the A string poles anyhow????

So, JV Squiers eh??? Fenders best kept secret???...my mate prefers my JV to his US 77 P...and to be honest i do too.

So some pics of Angel:

Oh man, this thread makes me ache yet again, from selling jv-squiers and regretting it!

Sorry to include that six-string thing, but it´s a jv and I miss it.

wow - just stumbled across this thread and there are some fantastic JV's here, Rick your two basses are particularly stunning!!

Here are my two JV's:

both of these basses get gigged a lot, and i've changed the bridges on both (Badass II on the right and a GOTOH on the left), they obviously don't look period correct, but i have noticed an improvement in tone, plus i quite like chunky bridges!!! (still have the original bridges just in case)

original pickups in the sunburst JV (JV20XXX) and seymour duncan vintage in the other (JV59xxx), but probably going to swap out the SD's for some lindy fralins this year. The olympic white has turned a lovely creamy off-white :)

Both are great basses, though the white P is my fave, i've had it for longer, and the neck is just amazing, plays like a dream...

Here's some pics of my '57 Squier P re-issue- bought in march 1985 from Cambridge rock ( mail order) for £149. Neck plate dates it to October 1983, i believe.
Some wear & tear , but it's my favourite & a keeper !!! Well it would be after all we've been through!!

Apart from a few string changes & set-ups, it 's as it came out of the box. It also feels pretty light.

Here 's a pic of the original packaging - do I need a new anorak ?

it's been in cupboards etc since I got it - not sure why i kept it actually. Don't recall any tags , leaflets or accessories coming with it though
