M-N-Y
With my jazz and fusion leanings coming firmly to the fore I have to say that I think Jimmy Johnson is one of the outstanding bassists of his time. He has such a lovely touch and tone and seems to play just the right things regardless of whether he is playing with James Taylor or Allan Holdsworth. One of my favourite recordings features Jimmy it's called Arrowhead by Wayne Johnson trio and it is amazing stuff. Check out the title track. Incidentally rather unusually Jimmy plays fretless on a good proportion of the album. risingson
Jimmy really is one of the most melodic bass players I've ever heard.

Chris2112
This Arrowhead stuff is pretty cool, I've never heard it before! If you can be bothered to listen to Allan Holdsworth noodling (I can't most of the time) then check out the 'All Night Wrong' live album. Jimmy is pretty superb on that. M-N-Y
Another of my favourite tracks is called 'Take for example this' from a Billy Childs album recorded in the late 80's early 90's. Awesome stuff. check out this video of JJ playing with Lee Ritenour, great groove and a very nice solo around 2.20. I love his bass sound it has a really zingy feel to it. MoonBassAlpha
Lovely playing, but I'm a bit surprised nobody mentioned the Arrowhead clip sounded rather like early Pat Metheny (without keys)

Saw Jimmy with Holdsworth a few years back; must admit as much as I admire Holdsworth I'm not a huge fan of the music, but Jimmy was great.
