Cheap onboard pre

Hi all, I've got a cheap fretless project on the go, and wondered if anyone knew of any cheap onboard active tones circuits that would give it a bit more life. I've got an East J-Retro in my main bass, but I don't want to pay anywhere near that sort of money for this 'hobby' bass. Is there anything halfway decent for less than about £50 or will I have to 'up my game'?

Have a look on eBay and google for the Artec onboard preamps. They mostly come from overseas on eBay but you can get a simple Bass and Treble stcked pot or other versions for under £50 easily. They're not bad either, maybe a little hissy if you boost the highs alot.

Axes r us do a few fairly cheap models. I got a chrome jazz bass assembly to use on my jazz, but never fitted it because I didnt read the description properly! Needs space for 2x9v batteries and also needs an external jack socket as all the holes on the assebly have knobs on them!

Cost me £36 in november, I never fitted it and it seems a decent bit of kit. You can have it for £25 posted if you like?

You could easily make that fit a regular JB by replacing the two mini-pots with a concentric too. It would probably work OK off 1x9v too, just not so much headroom.
