bengreen49 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Hi all Been lurking here for a while and have enjoyed reading through all the posts (some good banter). I'm a terrible bassist so haven't felt able to contribute but, I am looking to get some lessons and learn to play properly... Anybody in East Lothian/Southside of Edinburgh recommend a good teacher? Cheers - Ben Quote

RichF Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 welcome - East Lothian's great. Stacker's from East Lothian. Quite a few Edinburghers joining up too. All good. Let us know if you find a good teacher in Edinburgh. Quote
LukeFRC Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 theres a fair lot of us from edinburgh and about now. Quote
Stacker Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Welcome, Ben. Try the guitar shops, like GuitarGuitar, Red Dog, Scayles; they're bound to have names they can pass to you. But I'd keep pressing on yourself, mate. Just watch, listen and practice, practice, practice. Quote
ScreencastTutor Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Welcome, which part of East Lothian are you from? Quote
Dave Tipping Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 +1 for pressing on yourself ... you'll pick up some good tips on where to rest your thumb .. and finger positioning etc. from youtube .. the rest is all about playing and playing some more. Start with a few of your fav bands .. keep practising until you can master a couple of tunes you like. If you've got any guitarist and drummer friends .. once you've got a couple of tunes learned try and get a wee jam together. Playing with others was the kick up the backside I needed when learning. bengreen49 Posted February 6, 2012 Author Posted February 6, 2012 Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I am practising but I've hit a wall (if you know what I mean). I feel like I am just muddling along right now. To keep it interesting I am learning stuff from bands and genre's that I wouldn't normally listen to (which can't be bad) and is actually way more fun than getting beaten by the hard parts of songs that I do know! ScreencastTutor, I'm in Macmerry just off the A1. Quote
janmaat Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Oh, I am just popping back into this thread to get my coat... gets coat Quote

I'm still awful at playing but I would recommend playing along to a drumbeat or metronome. I never used to bother but that meant everything I played was out of time (and still is). Also recommend MarloweDK on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/user/MarloweDK?feature=g-u-u certainly for slap he is very helpful. Quote

Nothing will improve your playing quicker. Quote

bengreen49 Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Maybe there should be a sub-forum for folk who own basses but can't play them. Quote
LukeFRC Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 and call it 'basschat' as opposed to "bass players chat" Quote
