GarethFlatlands
I've recently picked up a fretless bass and am loving the sound. Anyone got any fretless lines they enjoy playing that I can use to get a handle on the instrument? So far I've been playing:- Pink Floyd - Hey You Bush/Gabriel - Don't Give Up Gary Numan/Alan Patridge - Music for Chameleons But am looking for others. Paul Young seems popular, and I forgot about Paul Simons 'Graceland' album. Good start!

mart
There seem to be quite a few Kate Bush tunes with some very tasteful fretless playing:

leftyhook
Mick Karn's lines are superbly off the wall. Apparently he didn't know the notes on the fingerboard back then. I'm sure I heard they just let him rip and worked the songs around him. It was seeing him on the Whistle Test that inspired me to have my Wal custom built ( it used to be fretless) If you want basslines with structured modes etc.... this isn't the stuff to listen to. But if you want a ride with some scary surprises, Mick Karn all the way! this is a distinct bassline: http://youtu.be/O_F7LG3oX18 Edited February 8, 2012 by leftyhook

That surprised me, I never knew it was him!
So much fretless work in the 80's was Pino! He managed to make himself a sound that became the staple pop bass sound of the time, you've got to give the man credit, he's amazing. musophilr
Lee Sklar used to play a fretless. Try some of the stuff he did for James Taylor. Then there is the bloke who played for The Band.
