I'm looking to spend as much as needed on a compressor - split between getting a rack mounted unit or a pedal.

I've tried a few pedals out, none of them have been what I'm looking for just yet...

Any recommendations? I'm going to be using it sparingly, as a boost during solos / middle sections... been recommended a Demeter compulator or an EBS Multicomp already, but they're very hard to get hold of in the UK...

I base a lot of my compressor opinion on this article:

And here's the review for thr 3630:

Not so great :)

I think you may of already answered most of your questions with that article then?

Only one man's opinions and I certainly don't agree with all of them. Compression is a very personal thing.

When I wrote that, I knew I'd regret it :)

Yeah I agree - but the problem is I don't have too much money to keep spending on compressors till I've found one I like, and no-one around here has many in stock!

A strange suggestion but have you considered a boost pedal instead?

or get an EQ pedal.. you can then boost the frequencies that you want for a particular solo sound. I used to add a little middle, cut the very lows and the very highs, giving the sound an almost wind instrument smoothness.

I used to love the old TE dual compressor pedals.
I've had three or four over the years.
They have a good but coloured sound

I've also had a TC "Triple C" rack unit which was good.
You hear a lot of good stuff about the FMR "Really Nice Compressor" too
Both of these are transparent sounding

I'm using a half rack Presonus Blue Max which is good, but is a PITA to sit on my EA combo 'cos of the amp strap handle :)
