molan
As part of my ongoing music room project I'll have some space to have a couple of basses out of their cases and wondered if anyone had any recommendations - I've seen stands ranging in price from under £5 up to about £25 or so and not sure if it's worth paying extra for a home stand only? budget bassist
I was actually going to recommend one of those before i read your post ^^^ they seem really solid, fold up small and i really love hercules stuff, i have two hercules wall hangers and they're really good. I actually need to buy one of those for upcoming band practices and gigs etc
bass_ferret
Not recommended for guitars with nitro lacquer. Whats that all about?
tauzero
A-type stands are OK for symmetricalish instruments. If you've got something like a Thumb, they tend to lean over on the stand. What you need for those are stands with a sort of pivoting cradle like this one. It also gives a little protection to the back of the bass - I've had a bit of damage done to a couple of my basses while they've been on A-stands by something scraping the back of the neck near the neck-body join. budget bassist
Or even better than that, one of these, safe as houses those things.

Currently have a Quick-Lock which gives basic support at the base of the guitar only.
pockethammer
got to agree with tauzero as far as the hercules is concerned...... i've a jass & it doesn't like sitting in this little stand so i got 1 of these http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk/mod_1/pages/....5-30-5-111.
99ster
Not recommended for guitars with nitro lacquer. Whats that all about?
Gibson guitars in particular have a big problem with their nitro finishes getting ruined by contact with any sort of rubber or foam (seems to be some sort of chemical/pressure reaction) - & you have to be VERY careful on any guitar/bass that has had a recent nitro re-finish as well (it can take at least 6 months, if not longer for a nitro finish to completely finish drying). So it looks very much like Thomann have had some very upset guitar owners complain about their nitro finished guitars being damaged after being left on a stand (think how much pressure is on the bottom of a bass when its sat on a guitar stand) & maybe been threatened with legal action. This looks like them covering themselves against this by describing all their stands as 'Not recommended for guitars with nitro lacquer'. I emailed Thomann a while back when I was looking for a stand to ask them for a stand that they would recommend for a Nitro finished bass - & this was their reply: " the problem with nitro guitars depends not only on the padding of these stands! Its also this special finish, which isn't so resist against longer pressure marks! The best place for this guitars is the gig bag or the case! " (Hercules stands have 'Specially Formulated Foam' that they used to claim was safe for Nitro finishes - but I think they no longer state that explicitly on their site...) Edited April 7, 2008 by 99ster

I can understand what Thomann are saying about the Nitro finish as it does tend to rub off easier than a normal finish but i have had my HW1 Jazz on one for about two years owrth of gigs and just checked it for marks and while there are plenty none of them have come from the stand. IME of course. Edited April 9, 2008 by dave_bass5
