Couple more ideas. Not really alternatives to drums just variations which might make things more portable and space efficient Cocktail drum kit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzB9s-drzAY Suitcase drum kit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDt3D5WaCPw
rOB
Just saw this today and thought it was worth posting as an example of cajon & cymbals in a heavier musical context. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1TyWzJpF4M
jimbobothy
Anyone thought of a Djembe? The amount of different tones you can get out of one of those played well is really ace!!

Of course, there's always the ukelele.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RylxBtEM0sI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF5HsIpH5qY
rOB
Love the idea of a bass, percussion and vocal band.
Hmm, been thinking about this for a while now. Looking forward to getting back to the UK in Sept so I can try it out. Inspired by this thread as well as bands like DFA 1979, Clatter, Lightning Bolt and Royal Blood. At the moment I'm thinking a vocalist (possibly some room for shakers or a tamborine), bass and a cajon player. Does anyone know any bands using a similar setup in a rock setting? Any thoughts on whether it would work? Things to consider?

Probably the most, or at least one of the most versitile hand drums. While playing I also use a foot powered tambourine, wrist bells, shaker, and rainstick in various combinations.
