Spoombung
Hi Bass players. What nickel roundwounds would you recommend that feel like DR Sunbeams but are a lot cheaper? PS. I Don't like Rotosound nickels...
warwickhunt
Not the same as Sunbeams but if you want to try different nickels you could do worse than try the Hartke strings (£4-£5 on ebay) and a similar price are Rosetti strings. LukeFRC
the legacy strings that are £6 a packet are pretty good.

Billy Apple
I use Ernie Ball Nickel Rounds with no Ill affects. £17.95 from this lot.. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/8376-ernie_ball_4_string_bass_slinky_nickel_strings_45_105_hybrid_slinky_45_105 Can't stand stainless, me. feels like a cheese-grater
Musky
Not the same as Sunbeams but if you want to try different nickels you could do worse than try the Hartke strings (£4-£5 on ebay) and a similar price are Rosetti strings.
Unfortunately the Hartke strings seem to be a thing of the past now. They were all over ebay but now they've gone - I suspect Hartke were clearing the line. I've tried the Rosetti strings and they don't sound bad at all. The wraps at the ball end are a bit hit or miss though - I bought three sets and the silks on the E strings barely squeezed into the (quite large) keyhole string retainer on my Aria CSB300,
Peaty
The overwater nickels sound great but they are not a cheep option. http://overwaterbasses.com/shop-2/bass-strings/

StraightSix
I like the Picatos too and, contrary to your liking, I've been playing the Roto RB40 nickels for the last eight years and really like them.
