OldGit
Ok I think I've sorted the stand problem ... It hangs on my Hercules Autograbber stand .. This seems to remove the problem of the top heaviness by detaching the spike from the floor .. I'll take a pic or two when I get a minute .. My bass guitars are now standless though Still these stands are not that costly and it's my birthday on Monday Edited April 16, 2008 by OldGit

I was just thinking that you could get a plain ordinary gooseneck stand for a fiver and return the Hercules to its former labours. Of course, if this results in the Stagg plummeting rather than standing, it would not be a good idea and you would be sad.

No the Herkie grabber doesen't grab the Stagg and yell "Why - you - little - ..." as it does to a EBG ... The thing with the Hercules is that the neck grab thing is a high up so the stag's spike is off the ground thus there's no pivot point and hence no sideways push.. that seems to be the key. Maxcat
So today I find out that I am a colour whore.I started out ordering the Metallic Black, take delivery of a violin burst, return said Stagg and today Im told that the next delivery is the middle of May. Alternatively I can take delivery of a Transparent Red like Linus's tomorrow. Surprised myself by saying ok straight away. Got to say thanx to Linus for posting the picture of his red one. Looks great and made the decision a no brainer. Just goes to show, when you got bad GAS, deliberation aint got a look in. Cheers. Wish me luck tomorrow. Linus27
Maxcat, No problem with the help. I think your be pleasantly surprised at how much better the red looks in the flesh. Its such a lovely deep powerful red that does not really show in the pictures. I think your going to love it even more when you see it for real. Good luck and let us know how you get on with the Stagg.

OldGit
Last night was Mrs OldGit's 50th birthday party and we did a turn ... me on Kylie the Skinny Upright Bass, her on the flute. We played a very short verion of Take 5 and it was a huge hit. Scrappy video of the event shows the bass sounds great and certainly looks the part. More than that loads of people made a point of saying how nice it was and, amazingly, how sexy it is. That does seem to be a common reaction from women .. I doubt if I need to tell upright bass players that but it's a revelation to me .. though I do fancy Paul Gardiner so maybe that's part of it It's certainly one of those instruments that gets attention from civilians as well as other musicians. It sounded fine through my normal EBG setup but we were just playing very quietly. I'll have to research some more to see if it works as well in a band situation. A very promising first public airing, I'd say.

No sound check, the lighting's terrible, my shirt is way too loud Oh and we don't look our best and there's a big fat music stand with a different band's advertising on it in just the wrong place It sounded rather nice though. As has been noted before, they sound more like a fretless bass guitar than a wooden double bass but loads of mwaaah and slides sound stuff:) If someone knows how to take the sound off an AVI to edit it and make an MP3 I may do it ... Rather wait for better conditions though ..

Maxcat
Hi all. Played the Stagg in public for the first time last night at our Jam in Ash. Went down a treat. All sorts of "Closed my eyes and thought it was an acoustic" type comments" so it looks like ive got the sound right at least.Adds another dimension to the band sound and certainly makes for a different dynamic on stage. OG you are right. Chicks dig it large. All in all for limited outlay, a lot of bang for your buck. Re Hercules stands, can I order on line stating Im a BassChatter or is it easier by phone. BTW thanx to poptart for the stand deal in advance. Stagg on mighty warriors.
OldGit
Had my DB lesson .. My technique's Ok (amazingly), the bass needs its nut lowered a few mm to stop some horrible noises in half an first position (see got the terminology too ) and the he suggested raising the action to get a better DB sound .. It's not bad as it is, that was just a "could be better" suggestion ... He bowed it and declared the bridge arc not really enough as he was finding it hard to avoid playing two strings when he "dug in" (or whatever) with the bow. It actually bowed OK apart from that though. So I covered postioning, playing high and low, using open strings as much as pos, vibrato, holdingt the thing to free up my left hand to move and play rather than support, plucking and bowing... Not bad in an hour Had to drag him back from geting me to play two octave scales in the lesson I'll do that stuff in my own time and go back fo rthat when I'm happier with teh whole instrument.. Cool, I'm heading down the right road.. now I just have to practice it more anand bulid a few callouses .... Got it's first proper gig with my band tomorrow. Just plannng "These Boots ..." and "Hit the road jack" for the first outing ... May slip in Smoke on the water and Peaches too though

paul, the
Great to hear that you're getting on with your bass, Simon. Although, I do worry that you might be getting a bit too friendly, as judging by your last post you're obviously on ecstasy. --- I'm going to email Zings again. It's nearing that time of the month.
