SJA
There's some great 80's basslines on the Frankie Goes To Hollywood stuff too... Wasn't that the Blockheads rhythm unit
Trevor Horn used a Fairlight to sample Norman Watt-Roy and the Blockheads drummer jamming, and programmed the sampled notes/hits to make up the backing tracks. on early FGTH live recordings you can hear Mark O'Toole actually playing those basslines for real, plus other riffs that Horn later used as keyboard parts eg. the intro to Two tribes. Horn preferred to keep the band out of the studio, but gave them the writing credit.

DirkThrust
+1 for anything by Deep Purple but particularly Made In Europe, a live album with Glenn Hughes playing funky heavy rock with a Rickenbacker. Not just great playing but great tone too.

Bullet-Rule
As for albums: 'Snow' by Spock's Beard 'No World for Tomorrow' by Coheed and Cambria, but I view all of Coheed's albums as bass masterpieces. Mic Todd knows when to keep it simple and when to lay down an awesome groove/ fill.
RaNoFuNkY
Marvin Gaye - Got to give it up (part one) Just heard this on the radio and no matter how often I hear it, it just always leaves me going.............................yeah! Also, Jackson 5 - I Want You Back is always a classic, has some great outro frills (I can hear it in my flat mate's room, and it makes me wana funk like no-one is watching). Best stop now really Edited April 8, 2008 by RaNoFuNkY

Dave Meros is an awesome bass player with a super sexy bass tone. He's also a really nice approachable guy too. I will of course have to give props to my band mates and suggest listening to Sikth and James Leach's awesome bass playing. Tone, punch and some wicked bass lines! foal30
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" lots of reasons to own this album, the bass playing is just one of them. Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm" I like the production and the "modern" bass tone. Donny Hathaway - "Live" soul goodness. James Brown "Star Time" box set funk bass primer, it's all good. Prince "Sign of the Times" probably the greatest album ever. probably. cop Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Larry Graham influence with cool chords.
