musophilr
IMO The guitar that does what an LP can do (+ a bit more), which also offers good high fret access, is the Yamaha SG2000. It's not a lightweight but it is well balanced so you don't notice the weight when strapped on.

He bought it as a cheap backup for his Gibbo LP Custom, and the Custom swiftly became the backup. He later on sold the Custom, as he realised it wasn`t the guitar that he really wanted. MacDaddy
i remember the Tokai's from back in the day. They had quite a good reputation - too good to be copies.
shizznit
Played Les Pauls for years and bitched about the same problems with that design until I switched to PRS. I will never buy a Les Paul again!
geoffbyrne
I think the OP may want to have a look at a Yamaha SG1000/2000. G.
Stu-khag
a colleague of mine has a gibson les paul axcess model. reduced heel, belly contour and its lighter. His one is a non floyd rose model (why it has a floyd rose I don't know and its the only model I can find a link to online) and i got the impression he didnt pay mega bucks for it. Its the first les paul I've played that I've ever felt comfortable with EDIT oops didnt read the post clearly linking to the axcess. doh!
