mentalextra Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) What sort of bass does Joey DeMaio from Manowar play. I know he plays Rickenbacker but the one I saw him playing had a very thin neck and its crammed full of pickups. Not my sort of taste in music just interested? simwells Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Fairly heavily modified Rickenbacker 4001 Quote
yorick Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Used to use a Rickenbacker most of the time... but have a look at this thread over on TB http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/joey-demaios-bass-677817/ Quote
razze06 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) a guitar (that's what it looks and sounds like, anyway) Edited February 13, 2012 by razze06 Quote
Gust0o Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Try Dawk Sound - he's a TB user, and has worked on Joey's basses for some years. Link to his site: www.dawksound.com/ Check the forum for the odd gem, it's an interesting read... Quote
StevieD_FenderP2009 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 It's the same rickenbacker he played years ago but he's had it modded many, many times by Dawk Sounds. He had the neck re-shaped and picollo strings put on it. Absolutely absurd if you ask me but I do love Manowar at the same time... Quote
winterfire666 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 By moonlight we ride!!!!!!!! Awesome! Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 " death to false metal" I'm sure he used 8 string . Saw them on the. Blow your speakers tour . Great,) Quote
4000 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Joey used to play modified Rics (and an EB3, s well as his Veilette-Citron 8 string)but as the Talkbass thing says, I think this is complete custom (there's an 8 string as well). He sold a lot of his old stuff; sadly I didn't get any of it. I've met him a couple of times and he sent me a tape once (which I still have) in response to a letter I sent him asking about his gear, influences etc. Great bloke actually, and far more normal than his image suggests. FWIW, I love Manowar. First went to see them in '84, thinking they'd be hilarious so would be worth a watch. They were absolutely awesome. In the 80s his sring gauges were 40, 50, 60, 70. At the time he played a lot like I did (or rather vice versa). I'm a bit slower these days! 1 Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I rea somewhere that a guy living in his parents basement came up to fin the guy plastering that his mum had hired was Joey DeMaio. Quote

Muzz Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Top band: utterly, utterly over the top, overblown and everything on about fourteen, rather than eleven. Bought the first album when it came out, and loved them since. Quote
Clarky72 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Real men play on ten, never gonna turn down again.... Quote
Clarky72 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Actually amazed how many people here like Manowar! Quote

Green Alsatian Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 One of my proudest moments was getting a mention from Tommy Vance on VH1's Friday Rock Show when he played my request for some Manowar in the late 90s. I love Manowar - first heard Kings of Metal in 1989 when a mate bought it and was hooked. Quote
Clarky72 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Oh go on then..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X1NlNSgAQk Quote
jezzaboy Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) I saw them at the Glasgow Appollo in about 84 and they were loud and completely over the top, sticking swords in the stage at the end of the gig. There was a clip on Ya Tube where Joey and the manager were at an outdoor gig on the continent somewhere and they were testing the pa. It was only putting out something like 140 db and their contract states that the pa must put out something mental like 145 db and unless the pa was upgraded, they were not going to do the gig! That`s what you call real men. Or people who are really deaf. Edited July 26, 2013 by jezzaboy Quote
stu_g Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 yeah they never do that anymore when all the bands wanted to claim the title of loudest band in the world and the like Quote
Clarky72 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Yeah i remember seeing them at Milton Keynes Woughton Centre around the mid 90s, we could hear some weird jangly sounds when we pulled up at the venue, that was Joey soundchecking his bass and all the glass windows in the aluminium frames were shaking... Then when we got inside the ceiling tiles started coming down during the gig due to the insane volume! Metal!!!!! \m/ Quote
