Nibody Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I've always fancied picking up the Mandolin, partly inspired by my mums folk days, partly by Led Zeppelin. Just come into possesion of a Stagg mandolin. Have to say I'm finding it easier to pick up than the Banjo though I am perservering with that. Does anyone else here play Mandolin, and recomend any good sites for tabs? Quote
EdwardHimself Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) No. Although I have secretly always wanted one of these: As for tabs? Well I'm not sure. Do they have mandolin tabs? I tend to just learn things by ear, myself. Edited February 13, 2012 by EdwardHimself Quote
pete.young Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I have one of those, although its the 4-string variety. But it sounds good through a chorus, and is a lovely shade of seafoam green. There is some tab at Mandolin Cafe - www.mandolincafe.com . Don't tend to use tab mice elf. Quote
RhysP Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I play mandolin, though I haven't picked one up for a while. Can't help you with the tab thing, sorry - I've always just worked stuff out by ear. Quote
pete.young Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 EdwardHimself, you will have to hurry up - I've just found out from the Mandolin Cafe site that Epiphone have discontinued the Mandobirds both 4 and 8 string versions, just a few days ago. Or save up a bit more for one of these babies: www.almuse.co.uk/mandolin_gallery.html Quote

It is fantastic, and gets more comments than any other instrument I own! And if they've really discontinued them, then now I can look forward to its value going up and up and up. Quote
Dave Vader Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I have a mandolin and play it a lot, years ago the guitar tab sites had a few mandolin ones on there as well. But haven't looked for a while. (want a 4 string mandobird, might have to buy one now) Quote
franzbassist Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Not mandolin, but tenor guitar, bouzouki and octave mando here! The Chordie webiste lets you convert their chord charts to mandolin shapes, so that's a real help. Quote
Cat Burrito Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I do and Mandolin Cafe was probably the best one I used. I mainly taught myself from books. It was always fun gigging the mandolin as people automatically assumed I was a much better musician than I actually am. Ironically most audience members talk to me after an upright bass gig or a mandolin gig - everything else is just meh! Quote
Mog Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Yea Mandolin Cafe is the one I use most. If theres something I cant find I usually just have a look at the guitar chords and work it out from there. Quote
BassBod Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Shameless plug...I'm currently selling a John Marlow electric mando in the For Sales section of this very site..... Quote
oggiesnr Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Another vote for Mandolin Cafe. Depending what style you want to play their TablEdit files are superb and enough music there to keep you going well into the afterlife! Steve Quote
Leon Transaxle Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) I have a tenor mandola. Couple of inches longer tuned down a fifth. Blink and you'd think its a mandolin. I find the chords are easier for C maj songs on it, which seem to be best for my voice. Haven't managed to play it much recently as it has been borrowed by my daughter although perversely she would rather it was a mandolin as she is a violin player and it would be tuned the same. I bought the Fretted Friends tenor mandola chord bible from Amazon.. They seem to do books for all sorts of non-guitars. Edited March 9, 2012 by Leon Transaxle Quote

Not played for a while though; my eldest son has 'adopted' it. Quote
paul_5 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012
Would love to play Mando. Next on list after the Guitar is mastered to a reasonable level. I think a Mandobird needs to be purchased, then of course a firebird to go with the T-bird
Erm, sounds like somebody needs a 'triple-neck'... Quote
james_guitar Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Great instrument and +1 for mandolin cafe being a great site and resource for tabs, especially for Irish tunes. I've done some mandolin transcriptions of a lot of tracks including Rory Gallagher and REM etc; even arranged some Rodrigo Y Gabriella for mandolin. Let me know if you need any music or listening recommendations and I might be able to help.., Quote
paul_5 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I used to play Mandolin - this weekend I came into the lounge to find my two boys standing next to what can only be described as 'Mandolin Segments'. Not good. Quote
Monckyman Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Tap it, unwrap it.....20 golden segments.... Quote
essexbasscat Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Did a gig alternating several times between my 6 - string bass and a Mandolin. Playing the Mandolin was like holding a pencil Quote
Guest subaudio Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 (edited) I started to learn but had to sell it once I've built my arsenal of basses and big rig back up I'll definatley get another. I would highly recommend Mike Marshalls instruction dvd's for technique, he has a lot of stuff on Youtube too. Edited April 2, 2012 by subaudio Quote
Jam Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I have just come into possession of a mandolin, it's lovely! I don't know where to start, will try the mandolin cafe. The frets are so small! Quote
allighatt0r Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) Will very soon be getting my hands on a mandolin myself! Edited April 10, 2012 by allighatt0r Quote

Jam Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Bit of mandolin porn! It still needs work but it's beautiful looking (in my opinion, obviously...) Quote
