sixdegrees
Hi all. I'm looking to upgrade the pickup on my MIM Precision. I don't want to go down the SD QP route as I like a Precision to sound like a Precision - plenty of mids. But I'm looking at getting something with plenty of punch and output. Any recommendations from experience?

Dood
Hi, i have to say, i thiught the SD QP was exactly that, plenty of output and lots of mids! SD do a more vintage type pickup too, but there are a whole host of great passive pickups you can take a look at from the likes of Wizard and Delano to name just two. why not look out for a Fender reissue pickup too? I'd really like to give one of the Dimarzio pickups a go in one of my P basses.. The Will Power or maybe Model P. Sorry, I can't be more precise than that as i've been an 'active EMG' user for years! eddiehoffmann
I've been using the Wizard Trads on a Warmoth Tele for roughly 2 months now and I'm very impressed. I don't need my pickups to be any hotter or bassier than the original vintage Fender pickups and the Trads are perfect in sounding like proper good old Fenders. If you like the original P- Bass sound, go for it.
Nibody
I have 2 P's with Wizzards in, would recomend the Trads over the thumpers, or email and get them to custom wind a set for what you want?
sixdegrees
I thought that both the Wizard Thumper and the SBP3 were high output with a bit of scoop? They were both on my shortlist but I was worried about 'de-Fendering' the sound of the bass and losing the qualities that cut through the mix. eddiehoffmann
That's why I'm recommending the Wizard Trad.
Jerry_B
I personally prefer the Fender 'Original' Pbass pickup nowadays. Bit more pricey than a Trad tho', but not by much.
bigjohn
I put a Fender Original in a MIM bass a couple of years ago. Was a lot more responsive and had lot more bite than the stock. Had to reign the high mids and treble in though. Even with flats. I prefer the plain vanilla current stock US. It's got more depth when the treble's rolled off. Jerry_B
I tend to like it for the reasons you had to rein it in, but that's just personal taste for you But maybe the fact that I use it with a fretless and a plectrum might be skewing that to some extent. molan
I've just ordered one of the new Aguilar P bass pickups - wound to sound like one of the founders of Aguilar's '64 P bass - and I have a '64 to put it into so that's one reason for deciding to try them out

Saying that, i'd love another Fralin as i think thats the best pup i've ever heard.
Lozz196
For me, the SD QP is a good pickup, but it really de-Fenders the sound. Tighter more defined lows, sharper highs, plus it makes the sound sort of "metallic". I prefer Fenders to sound like Fenders, but these are a good way of retaining a Precision-type sound, but modernising it.

Twigman
I stuck Fender Original in my Warmoth build and it is just awesome!
Noisyjon
My 2 pence from experience: SD Vintage for that classic sound or the Wizard Area51 for a huge more modern P sound. Good luck!
chriswilliams666
+1 for the Fender Original. Have 4 of them in all my P-Basses. love them!
Davebassics
Seymour Duncan [color=#282828][font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]SBP1 Gets my vote. Got one in mt CV P. With a set of D'Addario flat wounds on there it can go from a mellow P-Bass sound to a proper growling beast.
Lozz196
There was a thread on here, with different sound samples of Precision pickups. If I recall correctly, the SD SBP1 was my fave on there - strangely, seeing as the Fender Original was also on there, I wasn`t overkeen, and that is a pickup I usually like.
