SHURE SM58 mic weights

Lots of info about this subject...
I bought a Shure sm58 from a well known south of England shop in 2009.
I just bought a set of digital scales I thought I'd weigh the mic.
It weighs, (with mesh cap), 323g.
The Shure website says it should weigh 298g.
Shure UK are not exactly enlightening about this. I've only ever heard of 'fakes' being much lighter.
Anyone care to weigh their SM58?

This latest from Shure 20/02/12....

'we weighed a SM58 and it was 320g'
Shure's own tech spec for this mic states 298g weight.

Mine is 320g as far as I can make out, but the scales I have here aren't exactly 100%...

It was bought new from a reputable dealer, it's bullet proof, sounds great and it's given trouble-free service for many years. I think if it were fake it would be much lighter, as you pointed out. I'd say the chances of yours being the genuine article is 99.999% and you shouldn't worry about it! I'm not! :D

Strange huh. Shure say don't buy one if it isn't the right weight, then quote sending it to them (for a fee) and they will check it. One would think that if the weight wasn't spot on that a fake mic is owned.
I take your point that weighing more is better than a less weighty mic.

It's only a matter of time.

Well those mics are now long gone unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view). I've not weighed any of my mics, although I did get a vernier caliper for christmas, maybe I ought to ask for a set of atomic scales for my birthday?

Obviously it must be the mean weight between the mesh cap on and off then :P

Well, it isn't that obvious as it happens. I've already emailed Shure USA to ask if their spec weight is with/without mesh cap. Shure UK couldn't give me that info.

I thought it would be with the cap on, I can't see you using one without one on all that often.

We have three SM58s weighing between 310 and 323g here.
I'm agree with 'EdwardHimself' that full weight with cap on are the norm.
Shure quote 298g.

Thanks for your interesting 'weights and measures' input Basschatters.

Harsh (but fair!!!)

...you also have to bear in mind that I'm as guilty of eccentric behaviour as anyone else on this forum, as during the recent snowfall, I found myself in the garden sanding down a Squier Jazz Bass neck. Even my seven year old was laughing at me....

...slightly off topic, but when any of you were weighing those microphones, did you at any stage think 'My God, what am I doing with my life?'...

Rotton sod you hahahah!
But we caught YOU reading it!
I suppose I must admit it has been a quiet week.......

I'm currently going through a check on another possibly 'fake' Shure mic and although a seemingly pointless exercise, I've discovered Shure are the most copied mic about. It is a little difficult to ascertain a real one from a fake one just by looking. Weighing 'was' said to be the best and possibly final test. However, a few of us here have now discovered our trusty SM58s are 'overweight' according to Shure yet they were bought from bonafide Shure dealerships?

 Yes! Definitely a First World issue!
Gotta go now, I'm alphabetising my CD collection. Then I need to tidy up my desktop.
And there's some chicken in the fridge I feel entitled to.
