Turns out one of the members at TB did decide to contact the family, so I am trying to see where things are going to go and then I will come back and post again.

What a tosser... why would they do that? Tis none of their business.

Guys sorry there has been some new developments in this crazy adventure and I really can't get into it at the moment until I see where it is going to go, Turns out one of the members at TB did decide to contact the family, so I am trying to see where things are going to go and then I will come back and post again.

So far so good I have talked to the daughter twice and it seems everything wil have a happy ending for all parties involved.

I will update asap.

fantastic news - hopefully the family will give the informant a piece of their mind too - maybe you could even persuade the daughter to join basschat and gives us a posting when she hears about our genuine interest that this superb instrument is back out there making music again :)

This latest development has taken me rather aback. I mean, I know that some people are so bound up in asserting the primacy of their 'opinion' that they'll conduct themselves online as might someone who is slightly mentally ill. You expect that from teh Internet.

But the idea that someone might be so 'offended' as to take such a step in the real world would be laughable, were it not for the potential seriousness of the outcome. Types such as these seem to be absolutely disconnected from the idea that real people with real lives exist behind the screen-names.

If membership of a specialist forum such as TB or BC exposes one to the crackpot ideas and actions of such deluded 'crusaders', then what's the point of sharing information? And what might we expect the next development to be? Gig pickets? With little clutches of foolish, red-faced fundamentalists screaming "Give the bass back"?

I spit on their gravy. Feel free to quote me on that, Mr 1SHOT.

This question could go round, and round. Like the wheels on the fun bus.

The real question is, of course: is the fun bus good for metal?

I still missed how the bass originally came to be in your hands; am still working on the basis of the facilities chap passing it on - I think, under UK law, you'd struggle to see how the family would have a significant claim to the item, or be able to secure it's return without some serious goodwill on the part of the current owner.

I'm unsure how it works in the US. You have some strange customs, including suing each other every five minutes, which preclude my further desire to understand.

Hopefully, little of ill will will come of it. But yes, it's a bizarre escalation. Let me know if you want me to contact the family of the TB member to query how they managed to breed such a scrote.

Only, in the quiet of the night, when their dormant thoughts lap against the hard shore of their morals, does such sentiment reveal itself in its true form - no more "give this bass back"; but, rather, "give it to me".

And, if I can't have it, no one can.

The utter f***wits.

Topically, for a nation of our lord, we shall turn to Corinthians 13:11: "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me."

On that basis, could you frigging well hurry up with putting them behind you - lest someone require a smacked botty for encouragement.

Quickly...send the bass to the UK to be looked after by the Basschat collective.

Then again it would probably be extradited without any proof back to the USA.

Boom

the bass would be destroyed.
If that's the price of restoring harmonious discourse on TB, perhaps that would be the best idea. Ship it to my house and I'll put it on the bonfire.

No need to thank me.

Okay guys, Yes I know who one of them was, I have to say I believe he was trying to be helpful, rather than cause anyone grief. Although I did also learn that there was WAY more than the one, and I'm sure there's a mix of reasons behind each of them.

I have to admit I can see where some felt as if they were doing the right thing by letting the family know and I understand the logic there. I personally would never involve myself in others affairs to that extent, but I can see where their thought process was and they probably felt as if they had done some good.

Others I'm sure w/o any doubt whatsoever did it out of good ol' spite, bitterness, and jealousy. Those are the ones that really get under my skin the ones that had no good intentions not for me, nor the family of the original owner.

So I have talked in great lengths with his daughter, She is absolutely one of the sweetest people I have met in a long time. She has been a huge help with information and said that she was happy it ended up with someone who would appreciate it, as well as the story behind it.

By my asking her a thousand questions it has given her a chance to bond with her father even more so than before and I can't express how much she seems to truly enjoy that ability to do so right now. She seems genuinely happy to be able to relive his days playing with the Crickets and he told her he even got to play a bit with in Buddy Holley in Iowa a few years before his death. (I think I said that right)
Even opening with the Crickets for Elvis at a small Iowa venue.

I'm sure a lot of the guys telling on me felt that I had done something wrong and wanted to do the right thing so no I am not holding any hard feelings towards them at all, I am sure some would be glad to know that everything will have a very happy ending, or rather a new beginning as her and I have talked over Email and by phone at least once daily since all this started.
She is learning more and more about her father than she had ever known, He is getting to relive all his best memories, I am getting to hear an incredible story, and all of you are getting to somewhat watch it unfold.
Absolutely one very cool bass, an even cooler man behind the music, his incredible daughter, and the guy that stumbled into one hell of a story.

For the record, She IS a member of TB I'm not sure she's into the whole forum thing but I will let her introduce herself if she wants to. She joined the forum when a member posted links to the TB thread in an email to her so she could see what was going on.
She then asked me if I'd give her a poster if I ever was to split the stuff up.
To which, she was abruptly told no, ONLY because I had no idea it was her. Had I of known, she would have definitely been given one and has since been given an open offer to have one should she ever decide the pictures aren't enough.
I'm actually really considering getting them framed and sending one to her so she has it for herself.

For those of you that frequent TB I'll probably be re-posting some stuff back there soon. Stay tuned. I'm sure she's pretty sick of her in box being filled with Emails telling on me lol

I hate "reality shows", but this is one I would watch...

Yes. Someone should get this on the telly as a documentary/human interest programme. Interviews with all those involved, a history of the Fender Jazz Bass, loads of publicity for TB and BC and best of all - lots of slow, lingering close-up pans and zooms of the bass! Hurr...

Fascinating read this. Unfortunately none of the links are active any more (even the google cache trick didn't work for me) so I still haven't seen what all the fuss is about! I hope the issues with this have all settled down now and the bass can be enjoyed by its rightful owner. It would be great to see a pic or two though...

:)

BC better than TB.

That's pretty good, but I feel you've lost some of the impact of the original story. Where's the love interest, for example?

Don't you just love Friday afternoons?
