thunderbird13
Tonight I have my first gig ( and probably only !!) gig of the year and I've come down with the worst illness I've had in years - sort of cold/chest infection/ dizzyness thing. TBH I practiced last night and struggled to hit the right notes as my fingers feel heavy - do you think I should play tonight ( and probably get sacked because of my playing ) or cancel ( and get sacked because of my commitment ) what a dilema ! Mykesbass
The Show Must Go On!! I'd have thought it was far less likely getting sacked if you show that level of commitment no matter what you make of the gig. Remember, roll all the tone off so you are just making a dull thud in the background - then you can blame the room's acoustics
SteveK
do you think I should play tonight
Only you can answer that. But, I've always been of the opinion that you make every effort to do the gig. If you can get to the gig, hold a bass (even if you're sitting down), and it won't seriously exacerbate your condition then IMV you should do the gig. thepurpleblob
You have to be dead before you skip a gig. It's the law
chris_b
Yep. I've played gigs sitting down and overdosed with Lemsip and antibiotics. In my case the band was impressed with my commitment and forgave the mistakes and lack of performance.

KevB
Could be partly psychosomatic because you know the gig is tonight and the nerves are kicking in a bit? Turn up, do your best and don't worry about it. They can't knock your commitment at least.
icastle
+1 I'm guessing that the adrenaline rush will flatten your illness anyway. The only time you should cancel a gig due to illness is if you get leprosy because you'll be dropping more than notes.
Well TBH this is only the 3rd gig in 3 years so yes probably a bit of nervous but what with almost being sacked last week, the car breaking down and my missus's business failing this gig is pretty low on my list of priorities Of course I'm going to play , its only bass so noone wlll notice if I make any mistakes and then I'm sure I'll get sacked new week because they didnt like the jumper I was wearing !!!
Yes thanks to paracetamol and ibutrofen! - although we had to hang around until the comedy club upstairs had finished before we could play which meant no sound check just straight into it . Still noone seemed to notice apart from my wife who complained afterwards that the guitarist was to loud , i had to explain to her that they're all like that

woodyratm
Nice work I played a gig in a state like that before, did the gig then fainted just after. Also did a gig when I'd REALLY done my back in and could barely move - let alone hold up a bass. Not a fun gig that!
