GT40Graham
It may have been at some point but the clips posted here (apart from the Northern Lights clip) are standard Rick tone. The Sight and Sound concert is very clear, it certainly looks like a stock Rick too.
But apparently not. That bass is known as the "Great White" and I understand that it had a Di Marzio p/u in the bridge position. In interviews, Camp states that his Rick's were heavily modified. A guy on Rickresource currently owns the bass.

I remember reading that interview and him stating that his Ricks were modified. If they had different pickups at the time of the above clips I will be very surprised - it just sounds like a classic, stock Rick to my ears. Cosmo Valdemar
A bit of sniffing around the Rick Resource has unearthed some info on Jon's infamous Great White - here's a list of the mods: 1. Installed a 21st fret. 2. Removed stock bridge pickup and replaced with DeMarzio P's. 3. Installed a "phase" switch for the De- Marzio's' when out of phase the sound is thinner, but cuts thru very well; I imagine Jon used it for lead runs and when playing on the upper frets. I've gotten some good "clank" when out of phase. In phase, the sound is fuller. 4. Stripped factory finish to bare wood and refinished. Can't tell what was used but it has held up well. Some checking and some fading but has not turned the mucous yellow we see on factory white 4001's. And the head stock was done in black. 5. Installed a block of wood, covered in elec- trical tape, under the bridge, which raised the action significantly. (I removed this; couldn't play it with high action). 6. Truss rods showed enough wear to know they were carefully adjusted, but appeared to be originals. The chap who now owns the bass states the mods were made around '79 or '80, and that he considered returning it to it's original state but decided against it. leftyhook
Rick's.......another bass, along with Fender P and Jazz, lathered in Nostalgia and not much beyond., indeed a forerunner of it's kind of tone, but bettered many times over for emulation and variation. In need of a plectrum to get 'that' sound. Hail to the Grandfathers of basses, but lots of new kids in town. I would however love a Rick guitar. Truckstop
Somebody mentioned Dave Meros but no-one's put any clips up! Spocks Beard are one of my favourite modern prog bands. Last great album was Snow, but also really enjoyed Feel Euphoria and Octane. Havent really given X much of a chance yet. Anyway, here's a clip with some lovely rich Rick tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdu0-6SXhA4 Truckstop
