cheers Oli. As the man who switched me onto Sandbergs I knew you'd be peased!
You were right tho, once youve played them others feel like baseball bats. Maybe its the PLEK treatment, the neck is a dream and the set up out of the box is spot on. nice and low with no fret buzz or dead spots and the harmonics leap out.

Here is a recently acquired Sandberg Ida Nielsen Signature model (currently Prince's bass player).

I saw Prince last night in Manchester and was totally blown away by the band, especially Ida. One of my bands has just folded, so I was very disillusioned with the whole thing until last night.

As we were passing Bass Direct on our way back home I popped in as I knew Mark had an Ida Nielsen bass in stock. I must say, I was totally blown away, more than I have been by any other bass I've played. The build quality is sublime (hand-built) and the sounds from the active/passive circuit are incredible. It also weighs less than 9lbs, so is very light.

Mark was kind enough to give me a more sedate pickguard too. Once we manage to get home tomorrow I'll plug it in and put my favourite strings on it :)

Absolutely gorgeous bass; love that bubinga top. Abalone dot inlays, too, if I'm not mistaken - mmmm, nice. Was it a custom order or off the shelf?

I've currently got major GAS for the six-string version of this currently on sale at Bass Direct (http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Sandberg_Bullet_Special_6_Bubinga.html) - and this isn't helping at all!

Correct! Abalone dot inlays. Picked it up off the shelf as is....sounds as good as it looks!
If you happen to pull the trigger on the 6er from BassDirect, you wont be disappointed! ;)

Just picked up this lovely thing on this very forum. A Sandberg California VS4 (MIG version), my first Sandberg bass.

Welcome to the club! :D

That's a cracker, looks like it must have been built to customer spec; I think that's a non-standard colour, and the pickup is mounted in the 'conventional' orientation, rather than reversed (which is how Sandbergs usually are). Do you know how old it is?

Very nice bass anyway, hope you enjoy it!

What are your first impressions like?

:D

Actually, scratch that, it looks like maybe the VS model does usually have the pickup in the traditional orientation, must only be VM and VT models that have it reversed. You learn something new every day! :D

I've been in contact with Sandberg who said it was early 2014. Apparently the full passive is an option still with some finishes.

First impressions are all good. Nice finish, very well built with good hardware. The delano pickup sounds good through headphones and the tone control seems to have more breadth than the Fender on/off version; the real test will be at band practice on Wednesday. Neck is a nice compromise between J and P, frets are immaculate.

I was after a P type bass for the blues band I have just joined and this one came out of left field a bit. I think the only thing that might be changed would be the pickups if they are a bit to modern sounding, but that will need to be tested for a bit first.

Ooosh! Check that badboy out! Gorgeous, and very unique. What is that top, it's incredible?! Colours look a bit like buckeye burl, but the grain is quite unusual..... Anyway, hope you're enjoying it! :D

Thanks! The top is buckeye maple so you're close!

There are a load of other options too, but one of them is a swamp ash body, and requested an "extra light" piece of it. They came up trumps, and the whole thing is about 7lb13. Amazingly light thing and lighter than even some guitars I've tried! Oh, and it sounds amazing and the build quality is fantastic to boot!
