Fuzzbass2000
Blitzkreig Bop (....well actually the whole of the first LP). But +1 for Love Song.... a damned fine bass intro.
MattM
The basslines taht got me into bass are rather well known: 2nd half of "The Chain" - Fleetwood Mac New Years Day - U2
Yup me too, also throw in Waterfront by Simple Minds (one handed....dead easy ) and some half-arsed attempts at Geddy Lee, Pino and Mick Karn stuff. Still struggling to nail the latter 28 years on....
legoman
20th September 1984, lying ill on my folks sofa sipping Lucozade and watching Top Of The Pops when this band came on with some bloke with a red bass guitar wedged under his armpit playing a bassline that got stuck in my head.... http://youtu.be/gZPIwqS7cVE Edited March 10, 2012 by legoman
SpaceChick
Beatles - Come Together Pink Floyd - Money (I love the way the bass controls the move from 7/4 to 4/4 - genius!) Duran Duran - Rio
Cat Burrito
TV Themes of the 1970s probably planted the seed, repeats of Randall & Hopkirk (deceased) and The Pink Panther stick out in my mind. It was more little flourishes that jumped out the speakers rather than actual whole songs. "I like that bit".

BassTractor
Only relating to the title question (not the beginners' bit) Yes - "Roundabout", as mentioned several times before. It had a major impact on me. Finally something with interesting bass lines (that I knew of - I wasn't well versed in rock at the time). Later, this next song REALLY had an impact: "Total Mass Retain" (starts at 5:47, but the rest is quite fun too) from "Close to the Edge" by Yes, here in a bass cover version: bert

bottomfeed
I know I've posted in here before.... but going back even further in the cobwebbed darkest corners of my childhood... I remember thinking the whumping great bass on 'Meet me on the corner' by Lindisfarne really grabbed me.... forcing me to mime it with a tennis racket!... Never been able to hold down a 'proper job' since! Silvia Bluejay
Hm, I remember being fascinated by the bassline on You Should Be Dancing (I was in my early teens and disco was all the rage). Took me more than 30 years to take up bass playing, and learn to play it - it's on 5 strings! - but I got there in the end Edited May 22, 2012 by bluejay
mcnach
Don´t laugh... but for me it was Bon Jovi´s "Keep the faith". Big, full bodied bass, when it comes in it´s just fantastic. I remember thinking I would never be able to play it fingerstyle. Now I can I´m not a rock bass player, but I still love that song
