RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Trying to get more tidy/domesticated I have 2 bedroom flat. My brother has been with me a while, and it's ongoing. So , I've lost a bedroom. My (9!) basses are tucked away in top corner of living room. So, briefly : Gear in Bedroom: Mac Mini/ Toshiba flat screen TV/DVD Player. Studio monitors. Bass fx Headphones. Line6 UX1 Hard drive .Guitar Cables/ computer cables etc All on a 'kidney ' shaped computer desk .No room in corner of bedroom , so it looks odd. Large chair Living Room : all Basses. I also have an Ipad, so was thinking of having just that in the bedroom. Sorry for sounding like an old woman, but could somebody here give me their opinion? cheers Edited March 1, 2012 by RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
charic
Put exactly the minimum you need to record and practice in the bedroom. Maybe try and find a solution for a smaller desk to keep going for now and move the desk to the living room for a funky table. Having more than one person in the house and the practice room being communal doesn't work. It will almost definitely impact on your practice. RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Thanx charic. I was thinking ,it's the shape of the desk thats off-putting . My brother works nights so I mostly see him only at weekends. Maybe I should get a long table instead. I'll sleep on it ,)

mike257
A more suitably sized/shaped desk definitely sounds like a plan - I went for the desk with the biggest surface area I could find so I could get my screen, monitors, midi keyboard, mixer and preamp all set up on there, but from the sound of your setup it's all pretty compact and you could get away with a smaller workspace. If you get one with a slidey keyboard tray, maybe think about using that for your UX1, hard drive and other occasional bits, and leave the keyboard on the desk top - that way, your music gear isn't in the way when you just need to use the computer for browsing/work, but you can leave it all cabled up and just slide it out when required. Bedroom definitely sounds like the place for it though, that's what I've done when i've shared a flat. Lucky enough now that I'm sharing a house with the missus that she lets me take over the back room with music gear (even claimed a piano on freecycle!) but I know how tricky it can be when you're in a small place.
