Al Heeley
I'm after that Phil Lynott -Waiting for an alibi - intro sound - is that a flanger or phaser? Sounds like its on pretty high fx level
xgsjx
It sounds like there's an auto wah on there as well as a flanger. Can I name the effect Grenville?

The Walloper
I'm hearing; Chorus & Flanger
lxxwj
Can't find the STUDIO version (thanks a lot, youtube) but I can find some live sounds.. sounds like a ton o' mids with a light flanger.
xgsjx
Apparently he used a Phase 90 on a lot of tracks, but this may well be just a flanger of some sort (no idea what as yet & still think it sounds like there's a bit of wah in there). thisnameistaken
This came up a while back and some bod on Talkbass who apparently knows stuff says it's a flanger. Personally I think it's a phaser but I couldn't say which one.
Darkstrike
As far as I can remember, he did sometimes use a MXR Flanger/Doubler.
Higgie
Flanger without a doubt!
Al Heeley
sounds flangey to me, it has a sort of 'metallic' swirl tone in the upper frequencies. I hear phasers as being a bit more 'woody'.
charic
I used to use a flanger on it and it sounded right to me.

The Flanger has always had a kind of metallic sound to my ears, with Phasers always sounding a lot more "organic". I currently don't have a Flanger and have been asked to learn this for a gig, I'm having to use my Phaser but it does't sound as good as it does with my Dad's Boss BF-2B. That thing really nails the sound IMO. Can be found pretty cheaply second hand too!
Al Heeley
...thanks, off to search......plenty of BF-3's about, no BF-2B's, i guess they suit both guitar and bass as there's separate inputs for either.... Higgie
Apparently the non-specific bass version (The BF-2) is just as well loved on Bass so either one would probably do! The BF-3 is apparently not as good, but I haven't tried one so that's not a very good opinion to go by
