charic
Right chaps, BRX keeps telling us about these cool quirky basses. Lets see if we can find a brand he doesn't already know about!
charic
I'll start with this: http://www.playawayguitars.com/play_away_guitars_shop.php?itemID=
Lfalex v1.1
I'll start with this: http://www.playawayguitars.com/play_away_guitars_shop.php?itemID=547
But that's just a Stick with less strings. Too derivative!

Lfalex v1.1
Sorry! The trouble with quirky designs is that they either sacrifice aesthetics for functionality (Steinberger?!) Or vice-versa. It's vaguely relevant to draw a parallel with bicycle frame design. There have been numerous attempts to better the traditional diamond-shaped frame, but it remains popular because it fulfils the generally agreed criteria of what a bike should do through a well-balanced set of compromises. Alternatives exist, and in some respects perform better, but in others worse (recumbents). The best alternative I've encountered so far is the Status Streamline. Does what a bass should, but smaller, lighter and better balanced. More stable, too sure to carbon graphite monococque construction. I like the look of Born to Rock and Basslab, but must try before I buy... Besides, the B2r only comes as a P, and that just won't do! If I find any oddities out there, I'll chip in, though! charic
Don't know what this is yet but it's still pretty awesome Also looks like it might be headless from the bridge Edited March 5, 2012 by charic

BigRedX
I have to admit that TheBone Guitars look better than the bass versions. As a B2R owner reconfiguring it for other pickups should be reasonably easy as they simply bolt onto an aluminium carrier. All you need is one suitably shaped to hold your desired pickup(s) in the right place. As trying before you buy this was one of the points I was trying to make in the LBGS thread. The organisers don't appear to have any problem paying for the musicians who do the shows/demonstrations/master classes so why shouldn't they be similarly disposed towards attracting the more radical UK and European bass manufacturers. I'd be more inclined to endure the slap if I knew that this was going to be my only opportunity to try a wide selection of interesting instrument designs in a single place in the UK. BigRedX
Don't know what this is yet but it's still pretty awesome Also looks like it might be headless from the bridge
The tuners might be at the body end but it's hardly headless! Look at the photos in this article about Alvin Harrison. Also he's made more than one bass with the snake motif. Personally not my thing. Edited March 5, 2012 by BigRedX

I want proof that the instrument exists in real life and not solely in the imagination of the artist. :-)

And yes, I could be lured to the LBGS (or similar) with some money if I could have a guarantee of getting my mitts on something a bit different (and/or just plain "good") all at once... BigRedX
On the guitar front I quite like this too:
I've actually not seen this before. However there have been other guitars and basses with similar designs featuring gaps in the body. For example the O Bass from Lud Guitars who unfortunately seem to have gone out of business: There's also Kronodale and Petrounov doing similar things. charic
That o bass reminds me of an rks I saw. Incidentally a rks guitar my mate played in a shop was awesome.
Other than it being a bass banjo (obvious really) I don't know anything about it, although I do know that there was a version made by Gibson which looked just like their standard banjos except much bigger! Neither of those you've shown have the right headstock to be a Gibson. Edited March 6, 2012 by BigRedX

BigRedX
Not seen that particular one before, but I guess it's on the same lines as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lIvBjO1ldc There have been quite a few guitars with a display built into the body appearing in the last few years. Some are purely to play back video, but there have also been ones that use the display as an input device too like the Misa Kitara I find it rather telling that you need to come up with guitars rather than basses to stump me ;-)
