What is the bassist using to achieve that effect?

I suspect a multitude of synth-style pedals aka the Deep Impact, EHX Bass Microsynth or alike would get you close. But if it's really synthy bass that you want, then I'd probably advocate getting a keys synth. For me its the real deal, much more flexible and IMO much more usable.

Yup - I'd say synth pedal. Deep impact has a sound very like that - its one I actually use lots.

Havent tried the EHX BMS to comment.

Sounds like a separate filter and synth unit, or just a really good synth unit (Chunk systems / deep impact etc).
It is pretty irritating though...

Yep, i agree with this also. It sounds totally out of place and adds nothing to the music. A nice funky sounding bass, Jazz or Stingray for example would had been far more effective.

Could actually be a Boss SYB-5 with an exp. pedal on the filter. It's definitely not the EHX BMS or the Octavius Squeezer.

I can get a very similar sound to that using my Agent 00Funk and Brown Dog gated fuzz pedal.

Yeah but there are times where it sounds like he's doing more with the filter than just envelope control. I agree that the Chunk Systems combo is a really good setup though.

[/quote] Can't say I have heard the original, but perhaps he was asked to emulate a synth bass. We don't always have 100% say.
