This has always been fairly near the top of my list of great bass tone though. Nice subtle grind, enough to give the tone a bit of edge, not so much it sounds overdriven. Far as I know this basically just a well performed and well recorded P-bass+ampeg svt.

I once described watching Wilko as choosing to eat a big, craggy home-made pie with great chunks of meat in - top quality.

Its the string argument. On the one hand you have a processed sound like Tony Levin's Sledghammer

All these are tones to which any bass player would aspire but entirely different but appropriate for the song.

Perhaps there isn't a single finest tone, but a finest tone for a particular song.
