Etienne Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012
I dunno about the single finest, I feel that might be yet to come in the ever changing world of amplification and instrument technology. This has always been fairly near the top of my list of great bass tone though. Nice subtle grind, enough to give the tone a bit of edge, not so much it sounds overdriven. Far as I know this basically just a well performed and well recorded P-bass+ampeg svt.
That sounds like a Stingray to my ears, but no doubt that it's a great tone! Always loved that track... Quote

4 Strings Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I once described watching Wilko as choosing to eat a big, craggy home-made pie with great chunks of meat in - top quality. Its the string argument. On the one hand you have a processed sound like Tony Levin's Sledghammer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rtUeI2d27U&feature=related All these are tones to which any bass player would aspire but entirely different but appropriate for the song. Perhaps there isn't a single finest tone, but a finest tone for a particular song. Quote
4 Strings Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 or a more natural tone like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXDAIBvI48w&feature=related or better still but no movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3Y64dpZGnE&feature=related Quote
4 Strings Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 or processed in this way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_nIfYOSBFg&feature=related Quote
4 Strings Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 or just plain and simple but right on the money: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMqRxDZpWIg&feature=related and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcCoaN5q2Pg&feature=related Quote

fingerz Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I've always thought Tom Barney has an amazing tone. But ultimately, the best tone is your favorite one.. It's not for anyone to say what is best is it? Quote
Mark_Bass Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Im going to say mine on March 12th 2009 between 19:00-19:15 before i tweaked something on my amp and lost it Quote
