littlebass
i have a Trace BLX150 - was playing at home volume (about a 1/4 up) sudden loud rumble type noise and smoke. Switched amp off and left for a bit - now the horn is still giving output but no speaker! I have a new speaker to go in it but I just need some advice as to whether or not this will happen as soon as the replacement is installed? any pointers on what I can check prior to fitting would be good? many thanks! icastle
Unfortunately, smoke and amplifiers is never good. I suspect you have a faulty amp - you generally don't get smoke as a direct result of having a blown speaker and smoke means that something (not necessarily the speaker) has failed. You really need to get your BLX looked at by a tech.
MarkG3
I would be worried about putting another speaker in incase it gets damaged, I would take it to a tech and see what they say. Was there any weird smells with it like a burning?
thepurpleblob
Where did the smoke come from? If the horn is still functioning then at least the amp isn't dead. Personally, I would give it a try but start from zero everything and be prepared to switch off at the first sign of trouble. You could still be in for a new set of of output transistors. bertbass
Have you tried putting a 9v battery across the speaker terminals to see if the speaker has died. Got a multimeter? Check to see if the speaker has gone short or open circuit. If its gone short circuit it may have taken the output transistors in the amp with it.
