This bassline is pretty iconic- 'real' bass or not!

The intro when it kicks in is fantastic, great way to kick off an album.

Surely Der Mussolini isn't a bass line, as such? its a pre programmed sequencer ?

I remember dancing to this in Vogue night club* in Chester, many a time.

*Great club for a time, in the early 1980s They didnt let in people improperly dressed. I remember seeing two incredulous guys in suits get turned away for being dressed wrong, as a guy in a donkey jacket dirty jeans and doc martens wandered past without a look from the bouncers. Ahh bliss and karmic re payment for all the times it was the other way round. :)

There's a load from the 80's Here's a few of my faves:

Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
Jocelyn brown - Somebody Else's Guy
Jermaine Jackson Let's Get Serious
Melba Moore - Mind Up Tonight
Shalamar - There it Is
Level 42 - Weave Your Spell
Change - Paradise
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
Paul Young - Tear your Playhouse Down
Go West - Call Me

To be fair most funk/soul/chart I like is from the 70's Narada Michael Walden, Brothers Johnson, Pleasure, Chic etc........

I don't understand. A bass line is the low notes of the song irrespective of the instrument they're played on or how it's being played.

Besides there's nothing pre-programmed about this line. It's all analogue step time sequencing where you had to tune in every note pitch by hand (and ear).

+1 Some of my favourite basslines are played by Stevie Wonder's left hand

 • 3 years later...

Although the album was released in 1979,
this track didn't hit the UK charts until 1980.
Does that count?
Narada Michael Walden (Killer Bass line and tricky to nail).
02:50, there is a breakdown of just Bass and Drums, and the Bass
really jumps out

Pretty interesting that this thread resurfaced after three years lying dormant.

So many basslines from the eighties. So many great ones already mentioned. Where to start? It's an embarrassment of riches....

Here are two just off the top of my head that are a bit of the beaten path of most of the thread:
