Chris2112
And the gap around the 12th fret? Problem with the cutlass necks was that the phenolic resin on the fingerboard wasn't stiff enough to resist string tension. All 5 I've either owned or played so far have had the same issue. I've never found one that wasn't from 1983 or 84 either.
Funny, the last Cutlass I played had pretty low action and was generally a nice player. Sounded better than a wooden Stingray too, if only the marque had been brave enough to continue and expand on this range.
Kiwi
They did release a NAMM 100th Anniversary Stingray with a status neck on it some years ago but they sound more aggressive than Cutlass basses.
RachAllenBand
Hi, there, any ideas on the worth of a Musicman Cutlass I pre-EB before 1984, serial number B020678? I had bought this in London at the Gallery many years ago and it was sold as secondhand to me. Thanks for any info. Ages ago I found a site listing some of the recorded serial numbers of MM basses including Cutlass I's and II's... http://www.musicmanbass.org/mycustompage0011.htm In respect of Cutlass I's it says... "It appears that the graphite neck was introduced late 1982 (per Oct 1982 catalogue) but not named "Cutlass 1" Bass until 1983. Although necks are dated from 1983 to 1984, some bodies used can be dated much earlier."
Kiwi
I had one with a 1979 body. It was ex-Cliff Williams allegedly and recently swapped owners. I've not seen ANY neck dates earlier than 1983. So pop yours open and look for the hand written date on the heel in black marker pen, it'll help put us out of our misery. BTW - through body bridge Mystic and three bolt neck. There were alleged to have been 5 made and yours is the 5th I've seen. Hmm.
RachAllenBand
I've taken the neck off the Cutlass I and it says (written in pen) C-3-495, M-11-83. However, the body is stamped with July 1979. If I was to insure this guitar, what value should I insure it for? Any idea?
RachAllenBand
Or if I wanted to sell it, considering it does have the 3 bolt neck plate, I still have no idea what type of price to ask?
I wrote to someone, asking the price on this type of guitar, and apparently the price has dropped. I'm surprised because I thought this type of guitar would be in demand? I guess the 3 bolt neck isn't so rare. Not sure I want to sell it now, considering I wouldn't get as much as I originally paid for it. Disappointing. Castagné
hey all My contribution to the Cutlass club : both set up with d'Addario XL round wound. My luthier did a little fret job on both few month ago, especially on the 15 and 16th fret. I will try to set up the II with TI flat wound just for fun... Amazing killer instruments, even if I no longer play both so often Edited February 8, 2015 by Castagné
cybertect
Louise Duffy-Howard, who is probably best known for playing bass in the 80s with Hull's finest, the Red Guitars (often spotted with a fretless Stingray) is the owner of a black Cutlass. http://loudhailer.net/2014/08/05/groovy-loudhailer-electric-co-photos/7-lou-cutlass-jeff-danelectro/

flower8
This is my cutlass 1. It is a medium action bass but it sounds like a Grand piano. The graphite neck gives super sustain and clarity with respect to my 1978 preeb stingray. .. https://m.facebook.com/1482562132039940/albums/1482563945373092/
BrunoBass
Mark O'Toole from Frankie Goes To Hollywood had a black Cutlass I in the mid '80s and Zac Foley from EMF had one with a DIY paint job at the peak of their success in the early '90s. Loudhailer UK
Aha, just been directed to this post as someone has clicked onto our website from it. Yes, I have a Cutlass I serial no B022503. I got it new. Our manager got it from Manny's, probably 1984 ish. Together with the fretless Stingray it's still my main bass today. It's newer than the one at the top of the page as it has 4 bolt plate and doesn't have thru body strings. I remember FGTH having one too, a hired one I believe. I also have a fretless Stingray, an early one. Serial no B020639. I bought it in Camden Town in around 1982 for about £200. The guy in the shop said it was Boz Burrells. It sounds amazing, I love it and still gig with it. It's got a three bolt plate and through body stings. Black with ebony fingerboard. I have a hip shot on the bottom string. I'll look for some photos....there are some knocking round on our website http://loudhailer.net/ And this back in the day https://www.youtube....h?v=PN_Pff1yza8 Lou Duffy-Howard Edited March 13, 2019 by Loudhailer UK sorted it

When I got it I thought that the stings were all too close to the top edge of the fretboard - which they are on the photos above and below too. I think all Cutlasses are probably the same. It doesn't affect the playing tho... what do you other Cutlass owners think about that? I changed all the saddles round once so the strings went thru the lower holes, but it made no difference at all. I remember FGTH having one too, a hired one I believe.
