Does look quite good.

Whether you would want it in a sweaty smelly urine soaked pub though is a different matter.

What price is an iPad these days anyway?

It depends, but around £600 I believe.

That looks pretty good. However, several things immediately strike me as being poorly thought out from my PoV.

1. I don't like two-tier pedal units. I find that in the heat of performance I nearly always accidentally hit the lower tier buttons when going for an upper tier one. Unless the iPad app you are using has hundreds of patch locations so you can continually step up each time you change patch I would want both the program up and program down buttons on the lower tier.

2. There doesn't appear to be a display to show the patch number on the pedal

3. The dock needs a rack mount adaptor that allows it to be stored flat for transport and then pulled out and rotated upright when in use.

4. Not at all convinced of the suitability of using ethernet cables and RJ45 connectors in gigging situations. These cables are designed for static installations - not constantly unplugged and coiled up every evening. Neither the cable or the connectors are robust enough. I'm already on my fourth cable for my Pod and Shortboard. The specialised multiway DIN cables that I had for my previous Peavey and Roland systems were much more gig-worthy and robust.

Have just looked into it a bit more, I think you're absolutely right. I can't really think what advantages there are over my POD X3 which is pretty robust. The only negative is that I can't check my email on stage with the POD, which is a total bummer isn't it.

Less than a pedalboard, power supply/supplies, the pedals themselves, and a bunch of patch cables.

Yeah, that thought has always put me off about the floorboard. An iPad is not designed to be stood on by a clumsy singer or be sweat/beer resistant either. Alright for home or studio use, but live? Nah. I couldn't imagine using my iPad after its been exposed to a hot and sweaty gig environment. Definately some hygeine issues there.

One thing strikes out for me.

£800 for something that does what basically a POD does.

I suppose though with an iPad you could use it to display your tabs.
The advantage of the iPad system is that there are several amp sim/effects apps available for it, whereas with the Pod you are limited by what Line 6 provide.

Which is why the part that fits around the iPad needs a rack mounting kit.

+1
Both of the guitarists in my band have had the same problems with their Pod setups.
After several plug changes I've fitted boots over them and that stops (or lessens) the clip breaking off but the cable isn't really flexible enough for gig use.

The best I've been able to come up with is using flexible multicore cable with a bit of heat shrink round the ends (so it sit's tightly in the back of the RJ45 plug prior to crimping) and using CAT6 plugs instead of CAT5 so that the cable former holds the cables in place while you crimp them.

I'd give up on Amplitube and look for something else. While its not a bad app, as far as i know you can only use the iRig type of interfaces that use the headphone jack as the input, at the moment at least.
Having owned two, and now owing the Apogee JAM interface i can tell you there is a world of difference as far as signal level and noise goes.

Another option: http://www.digitech.com/en-US/products/ipb-10-programmable-pedalboard

It's obvious the designers of these devices have never been to any gigs other than stadium ones. At least the Alesis device allows you the option of placing the iPad somewhere more secure than on the floor. Also unless I'm mistaken the Digitech pedal only appears to work with the Digitech app while the Alesis one will work with any iPad pedal/effects.

Surely these devices use the dock connector for I/O and therefore are able to substitute the iPads convertors for something that's higher quality?

Which devices are you talking about? The iRig and a few others use the headphone jack input, but the JAM uses the dock connector and has a better S/N and a stronger signal.

The two mentioned in this thread by Alesis and Digitech.

Ah right, i was going on the fact that Nigel mentioned amplitube in the first post, and as far as i know that wont work with a dock connection.
Unbelievable! If that's the case then IMO it's further proof that none of these designers of iOS music apps and associated hardware live in the real gigging world.

Going from the alseis website

http://www.alesis.com/ampdock
"The Power of iPad
The AmpDock gives you all the controls you need to use your favorite guitar apps while performing or recording. Fire up apps like GarageBand, AmpliTube or JamUp, and use AmpDock's controls to instantly switch between your presets or activate effects"

This is confusing as i know my copy of Amplitube wont recognise anything plugged in to the dock connector, and there are many posts around the net saying the same.
I know IKM are supposed to be working on this, maybe they have already but hadn't last time i looked (and no updates have been flagged on my iPad).

I suppose though if you timed it with the guitarists tune ups it wouldn't be so bad
With my band i'd have time to check my Facebook and email, do some tweeting and look at porn between each song

We use one to do alway with vocal cheat sheets. You can pan across pages of course, and we position it low by the monitors. Not perfect as we haven't made up a bracket for it.. we toyed with putting inside an empty wedge which might still be a goer, and therefore stand on the floor.
At least it gets rid of a music stand.... not that I have any problem with them but this is visually better for our purpose.
