MuckedUpFunkies
Not to throw a spanner in the works but I've never not wanted to own any bass like... ever I'd never discount a bass just because of the way it looks, I owned a BC Rich warlock 5 a few years back (You know what its like when you join your first metal band before you find jazz!!) and It looks disgusting but if had a warmer, smoother feel/tone than any fender I've played in the same price range until I sup'ed up my jazz. Same with PBasses. Every single one looks a cheap knock off to me because of the fact that every company like ever has produced their version but at the same time I'm still looking to buy one now because they sound the Mutts Nutts :3 Sound > Looks (Apart from a ricky which is awful in both departments ) Dan

thunderbird13
About 2 months ago I took a day off work and went down the bass gallery. I spent about 2 hours there and played almost every bass that was on my wishlist and concluded Fender – never never never – just not comfortable far too upright a position Lakeland – worst that Fender Musicman – too chunky with the exception of the ‘79 Sabre which was nice but I was after 5 strings Overwater – just too big G&L - as bad as a Musicman Ibanez - just too skinny – felt like it would break at any minute Yamaha – nothing special but that headstock – yuck And just to annoy everyone else I ended up with a Warwick which I love ! fly1nl0tus
I find Fender Jazz basses really boring to look at and hideous to play. I realise that makes me a minority as almost every bassist I see on TV or live has one.

Bilbo
I am glad I am not the only one who thinks Alembics are designed by blind guys. Their custome jobs are almost universally gross. I think there are a couple of old Series 1 and 2 basses that I would play and the Stan Clarke model is not too bad but some of them.... Have a look at this freak show.... http://www.alembic.com/info/fcvault.html

I think that from my own experience, my own Stanley Clarke, just doesn't balance. Neck dives like a whale. I find this most curious as it's a short scale and is fantastic to play. Whether or not you like the sound is another point entirely though. Some of those other Alembics are frankly sick inducing. For the bod that thought "12 strings are just for the novelty of playing Jeremy by Pearl Jam" you obviously have never heard of either King's X or Cheap Trick. I appreciate that it's not everybody's cup of tea, but to say that the use of a bass is literally for only one song is beyond funny. It did make me laugh.
