paul_5 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Dunno, looks like an '80s bass, some sort of Aria or Westone style machine. Quote
Happy Jack Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Yup - looks like a Westone to me. But I'd hazard a guess that those aren't the original knobs ... Quote
Subbeh Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 (edited) Definately looks like a Westone and I actually really like the random nature of the controls Edited March 17, 2012 by Subbeh Quote
ash Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I've seen a couple of these with two different brand names, one was a Kay and the other a Lincoln I thought it was a Vantage at first but they were a bit 'posher' in their choice of woods. The Kay was a great bass with a very substantial sound to it I wonder if the Kay logo has been taken off as they had a bit of a 'catalogue naff' reputation in the day which was a shame as they had some decent products - nice unusual beast! paul_5 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Looks a lot like a Cort "Kay" bass. There's a fella here with two of them... MoonBassAlpha Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 The body shape reminds me of an SD Curlee, but I don't think they were through-neck... Quote
BarnacleBob Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Looks very like a bass Hondo had out in the late 70's to me BB Quote
Davetbass Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Yep it's a Kay... I've seen them branded lincoln as well. Quote
chaypup Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Thanks for all your help people Yeah I was thinking along the Vantage or SD Curlee lines. Kay eh? Well, I'm in now but I won't push it too far then. Quote
noelk27 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 It's a Kay, but it' the top of the range "K" series. It would originally have had a brass plate with a black embossed "K" as the truss rod cover. Have a guitar - also finished in natural - from the same series. These are solid and well finished, but the original pickups aren't great. Performance wise, falls between Westone and Vantage. Quote
LemonCello Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 My first bass was a short scale Kay rick copy, was a dreadful thing. That looks nice tho, especially like the Wal esque head stock! Quote
ash Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I remember how diverse their quality control was! My school mate had a Kay Precision that had a neck joint you could park a car in, a banana neck with 'orrible tuners and the natural finish showed off a basic ply body, I also had a Kay branded P bass that was my main bass for several years and it had a beautiful solid wood - ahem ash - body and figured maple neck, same brand, same music shop, same model designation. brummie Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 I'ts deffo a Kay, I had an identical one - It wasn't bad really. Quote

Changed the bridge and put a Dimarzio P/J set in it and it was very good, but not likely to make other bass players faint with envy. Quote
The Dark Lord Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Has a thru neck - which usually means good. Quote

Max Normal Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Copy of an early Yamaha BB perhaps? There is a PJ BB that looks very similar to this. Might be why its familiar looking. Quote

lowregisterhead Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I had one of these in the early 80's branded as a "Lincoln', as a couple of people have already said. It looked good, but the pickups were awful, and it had a serious neck dive problem - I tried to compensate for it by loading the control cavity with strips of lead, but it didn't help much! I got shot of it not long after and bought an Ibanez Roadster... Quote
