chrisd24 Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I recently acquired a double bass from b.c and its relatively beaten up,nothing structurally wrong with it but more aesthetics than anything else. I know that old d.b's are finished in spirit varnish but I have no idea of the age of this or the finish used, basically i was wondering if I colour matched the bare areas of wood and French polished it will it have any detrimental affects to the bass? sarah thomas Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Pictures? I'm a fan of Tru-oil for finishing instruments and you can keep adding coats until you're happy with the finish. Takes ages to dry though. Quote
chrisd24 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 It's the one in this link: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/168415-battered-upright-whats-it-worth-anyone-want-to-buy-it/page__fromsearch__1 Quote
sarah thomas Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Ah - I fancied that one too, but couldn't really justify another double bass yet, having only bought the first one in November. I suspect it would be worth finding out what the original finish is, as some finishes don't work well with others and you end up with a right mess. Quote
chrisd24 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 all i know is the finish is original (albeit pretty cracked and battered!) is there any discerning features of the finish on it that will tell me what it is? Quote
sarah thomas Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 It's way beyond my limited knowledge, but I suggest trying a luthier's forum like this one: http://www.mimf.com/ for more info. Good luck! Quote
