Having just bought an AV 62 Jazz, I needed a thumbrest (or tug bar) to finish off the look. Did a quick google, and came across this place, selling good looking ebony ones (amongst others): -

http://www.classicguitarboxes.com/thumb_rests.php

Placed an order at 08:11 on Saturday morning, and had a personal email from Guy (the chap who makes them) at 08:56, to tell me my order had been despatched. It arrived today (Monday), and is now fitted to the bass.

Nice to get a good product, at a good price, with excellent service.

Yes - Guy's been flagged up before, top quality work & woods, I've got his T/Rs on all mine. They not only look good, they have a much nicer feel & put you 'in touch' far more than a plastic moulding, IMO

GREAT!!!

Just what I'm looking for. I'm currently making a mid 50's style P-Bass in Shell Pink. I don't want to have the finger rest in Shell Zpink, sonic wondering whether to go for a plain maple one, or one in ebony?

Here's a pic of the style of bass with the pink rest in place

I'd go for this one (he'll do it in single hole):

I think I'm gravitating towards an ebony one. I had an original '56 P-Bass a few years back, and that had a black painted maple finger rest on it. I miss that bass, still can't believe I gave it away!!!

:o you GAVE IT AWAY, I can't believe it either :D Kev, you must be a truly generous, lovely individual or you were suffering some serious senior moment.

Another satisfied customer here. I have an ebony rest on my DIY Jazz from Guy. Top bloke who actually replies to emails. We even swapped photos of projects we were working on at the time.

Yup, I gave it to Thr guy who married my cousin as a wedding present. Strangely, he seemed more appreciative of it than my cousin did! Hahaha

I received my Guy Lewis thumb rest today. Maple in a single hole format for use on the mid-50's style P-Bass build I'm currently undertaking.

The bass is being finished in Shell Pink and I've decided to finish the thumb rest in the same colour.

The rest has Guy's name stamped into the wood on the base. Here's some pics of the rest in it's natural format, and also of it with the nitro lacquer applied also.

Here's one of Guy's single screw Maple T/R on my '51P <_<

[/quote]

Do you use it?? I presume you do otherwise it would be in the way.

I have a 54P single coil but I seem to be able to play it wth my thumb on the pup some of the time and floating around the rest of the time. Other folk pick it up and they can't get on that way at all.

The one that goes on my 73P went in the bin years ago - just got in the way.

I think they look really good and it's totally none of my business what other folk do but my mind set wouldn't let me have one on for that reason alone

Yes I use it & I have one in the same position on each of my P's (give or take a mm) B) it makes for easy transition  :D arse! :P
If I play pick, (notalot) I'm mostly down by the bridge, palm muting, so not in the way at all.

I'm tempted. Wondering whether to fashion something that would sit further back over the Pup than KiOgons. If I stepped the bottom it would fot half over the pickguard and half not which is where I'd want it. Then I could epoxy it to the pickguard alone to try it out without having to drill holes.

I suppose then if it was doing a job for me I could get Guy to make me a proper craftsman made job - they look a good product.

I use the single screw options from Guy on my P's to avoid drilling extra holes, so they can be put straight back to standard. If you choose the normal 2 screw then it will fit back further towards the pick up.
