solo4652
Folks, I've got my eye on this, which the seller says is a 1996 MIJ P. It has a Badass bridge, but the original is included in the sale. Apparently it's in good condition with only minor cosmetic scratches. Googling throws up little information about this flame finish. Do the Fender experts think it's a genuine MIJ P? Any thoughts about what it's worth? KiOgon
I think we need more than a head shot to form an opinion on, got any more?

Gust0o
Headstock shot would be ideal, if you're able to obtain one from the seller.
LukeFRC
from the body shot: photoflame P bass, with a badass fitted. I guess it would be genuine, i can't see anyone coping fotoflame.... worth? no idea £350-400? but then fender prices have gone up since I last was buying
guybrush threepwood
It looks like a 'foto flame'. If so, the top isn't wood, but a piece of film with the flamed maple effect printed upon it, which is then laminated to the bass and finished in the regular way. I think the body wood is basswood. Kempy535
Just to back up what everyone else says looks like a foto flame. I have a Strat in the same colour
warwickhunt
If you can't see this in person be sure to get good pics of the body as I've seen loads of the fotoflame finishes with splits and cracks in the covering; not to say the wood below is cracked, simply the covering. LukeFRC
I wouldn't go above 450.... actually personally I wouldn't go about 400 but you might think differently. When you get up to 500 there is a whole heap of good stuff around
Gust0o
Quick question lads: isn't the truss rod access normally up at the headstock?
bigsmokebass
Looking at the headstock and neck finish and overall appearance: from what ive seen from Jap basses seems legit. However, I've never seen the "foto flame" finish before. Hope it turns out well for you
Grand Wazoo
If the price is right I wouldn't let that go out of my sight, it is a great looking bass, MIJ is also reknown for quality and attention to details in terms of manufacturing, I have had a play on one of these about 4 years ago, and it played and sounded great, though I must admit to you, expect a heavy bass as the one I tried felt like a 11lb'er to me. Kempy535
Quick question lads: isn't the truss rod access normally up at the headstock?
Nope they based loosely on the 60's style re issues. So truss rod s adjusted from the bottom of the neck
I've no idea, but fotoflame instruments came with the same effect on the neck - they were noted for having markings that were supposed to look like McD's Hamburglar on the back. It might be worth checking into the neck a bit more. It's not a problem if it's another MIJ neck, and might even be a bonus if the finish on the neck is given to cracking as well, but a cheapo neck would obviously seriously devalue the bass. Edit: Actually there's a couple of guitars on this page that don't have fotoflame necks, so maybe it's nothing to worry about. Musky
There are a few without the fotoflamed neck. IMMO on here has one and at least one other BCer,
Ah, cheers for that Johnston. No mystery here then!
solo4652
I'm assured that it has no cracks in the finish, only scratches around the strap pins. It's been offered to me for £340 including gigbag. It's miles away from me, so I'm buying it without seeing it. Worth a punt?
Kempy535
Id buy it at that. You can sell the bad ass on and buy a replacement bridge. Well worth the money

Kempy535
Get in bought I really like the foto flame Strat I have its an excellent guitar. A Jap made P bass for £300 (after selling the badass) what's not to like
hairyhaw
Fotoflames? I liked 'em. The concept bombed but they made some really, really nice basses. Tried a few and none of them were duds.
