Dingwall - anyone not like them?

I would expect so, fret spacing would dominate though and I find it harder to bend that close to the nut anyway....(arrff arrff)

Cool.
And presumably the further down the neck to where the difference in angle relative to the bridge is more extreme, the same thing would be noticable... only in reverse?

I was so sold on the ideas behind fanned frets (and the look) I for them on my custom bass. Went a little more conservative than I hear are the scales on a Dingwall but haven't regretted it for a second. Would love to try a Dingwall one day, but keeping my regular fretted instruments too.

Thanks GW! I'll keep that in mind :)

GW was kind enough to invite me round to play his fantastic Dingwalls a few weeks ago - he is a gentleman, a scholar, quite possibly an acrobat and generally an all-round diamond geezer.

Just don't let him put cream in your tea, though... ;)

Hi Sheldon,

What in your view are the downsides, if any, to using fanned frets? Just to balance things from a discussion perspective.. BUt it would be a boring world if everyone liked the same stuff...

That's a tough question. We've done our best to eliminate any downsides.

Cost is one. Building basses the way we do is time consuming and expensive.

Having to rethink things a bit is another. Some people want progress but don't like change. Our basses aren't from Mars but they may require some adaptation to technique and EQing. Initially change can make you feel inadequate but that goes away soon enough if you stick with it.

I did find it more different up at the dusty end than the business end, admittedly, but it's only an adjustment - chords can be played, you just have to rethink your finger positioning. It meant that 6 seconds of our normal set was a problem for me for a while... ;)
