In my view, PA based setups shouldn't count in this category. I'd say it should be purpose built bass kit - a head and 2 cabs. Maybe a separate pre & power amp configuration.

PA systems could get silly, as you can just put together a Glastonbury, or bigger, PA system of any time and it'd cost you a hefty six figure amount. It would amplify bass, but it's not a bass amp.

Thats OK then, nothing I suggested is anything to do with PA kit at all ;)

I don't see £3000 as a crazy expensive bass rig, at least not to the point of writing home about it. Plenty of people use 4x10s that cost £800+, 2 of them and a head over £1k is near enough £3000.

The TC Electronic Blacksmith is £2000, but I'm with the people that said the Hellborg. I've never heard one in the flesh but I'd want it to sound perfect to spend nearly £3000 for the pre and 2x250w power.

The Warwick Hellborg amp is alright...didn't blow me away when I tried it. At that price I would expect it to come with a self replenishing mini bar and a golden ticket to Willy Wonkers chocolate factory.

I play EBS amps and that kit is not cheap either, but I do think they are worth every penny. I thought I was mental parting with that amount of cash when I bought my first EBS rig, but it has been the best musical investment I have made thus far.

I was the same when I got my first GK rig, the 700RB-II and two 210RBHs. At £1500ish it's not the most expensive rig ever but it's a lot of cash. God bless endorsements! I love my two rigs now.

I would imagine it would have to be the Warwick Hellborg rig. Whilst I thought it was great when I tried one, it's just so stupidly expensive as to defy belief. £1300 just for the preamp?!! Okay, I'd possibly pay that to get the Fractal Axe stuff as that really is all singing/all dancing stuff and depending on your viewpoint possibly worth it more than just a single amp/preamp.

Well the Hellborog is purported to be equivalent (ie based heavily upon) the designs of vintage Neve preamp/channel strips.

If that is the case, and the components are of similar quality, build is of similar quality etc, then given its an instrument level pre and an eq in a single box then £1300 is not in any way extraordinary. Go have a look at the price of some Neve kit!

Of course it would help a lot if it actually said Neve on it ;)

For real? What is that? Btw I agree with everyone about everything
Loads of boutique out there but I've never found anything that makes that much difference when listening from the back of a busy pub/village hall! I guess hellborg probably doesnt do village halls....
