Beedster Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Simple question, what are the best strings for slap? Cheers Chris. Quote
The Funk Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 What kind of slap sound are you after? I use 45s but some people use really light sets. I do like the Warwick strings. Quote
slaphappygarry Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 The elixier lights are good. The retain their zing for tha bit longer too. G Quote
The Funk Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 (edited) On my Fenders I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings (the green packet). I don't like too much zing but if the G is dull, it just won't pop as it should. But I really hate a harsh, trebly sound. Edited June 15, 2007 by The Funk Quote
ngombe Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 DR lowriders on my stingray - never found anything better. a bit pricey though Quote
nig Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 rotosound 35 to 90 swing bass, I believe they were endorsed by mark king for a bit as were the trace funky guage that are nla, they is bendy too... Quote
jacko Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I was using DR Marcus Miller fat beams for a while. Sounded superb for slap but I don't slap that often so I'm on their coloured range now. Quote
thumbo Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I'd recommend D'addario 45-100 pro-steels. They have a enough snap and thud to them without being stiff to work around quickly on the fret board IMO. Quote
Steve_K Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Give Status Hotwires a go - the single ball versions. Quote
MB1 Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007
Simple question, what are the best strings for slap? Cheers Chris.
MB1. Simple Answer,Whatever your happy with, slap is a style ,not a set of strings. There are more deciding factors involved action, set up,some people like lighter gauge strings some heavier, whatever works for you.no string on the market will ever improve your slap style if your set up and action is miles off the neck. The Funk Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 (edited) Hmm... I find it easier to slap on a bass with a medium-high action. I find it almost impossible on a bass with a low action (it just sounds sloppy). But then it's exactly as MB said, whatever works for you. The things to think about are really: 1. How bright do you want your strings 2. How thick/heavy do you want your strings I prefer the thicker/heavier and less bright strings for slap 'cos that's the sound and feel I'm after. What kind of sound/feel are you after? Edited June 15, 2007 by The Funk Quote
Alpha-Dave Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I like Warwick black label 45-105 (135), they have that 'shktew..' sound that a suspension bridge makes as you drive over it! Quote
Sugden Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I take on DR sunbeams, just the right amount of pop and lovely tone. Got to say Im swaying towards lighter gauges these days maybe my fingers are turning into wimps. Quote
Josh Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007
I'd recommend D'addario 45-100 pro-steels. Beedster Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 Thanks guys, much food for thought. MB1, good points, and I guess the bottom line is setup and technique, it's just interesting to see what people are playing. Any other opinions guys....? I'm looking for that really light Clarke sound really I guess. Chris Quote
