tommyjamesallen
Hello. I need a new gig bag for my db, I don't want something that's going to fall apart after 1 year and I don't really want to spend hundreds of pounds. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks Tom
sarah thomas
I don't know the make of my gig bag (came with the bass) but what I like is that it has loads of handles and plenty of pockets - at the back for sheet music and leads and at the front for bow or music stand are the ones I use most and a back strap. Rucksack type straps would be an improvement. Wheels are fine for college foyers but get wrecked on pavements. Good solid reinforced stitching is a must. I've heard people like Tom and Will bags which you can get for around £150. Hope it helps.
daflewis
Hi, I've not owned a tom & will myself, but a friend has had 2 in the space of a couple of years and they've both fallen apart.....
sarah thomas
Ah well ... looks like hundreds then, for a decent one.
daflewis
I bought one about 12 years ago from footes (about £150 iirc) - the make was called "OK", but it's been far more than that - it's been fantastic! Unfortunately I can't find anything about them now...!
geoffbassist
Martyn Bailey sell good quality bags for £140. I bought one after my tom and will died and it's pretty good. http://www.mjbl.co.uk/double-bass-accessories/42.html I'm not 100% sure but I think it's the same as this from the contrabass shoppe for almost twice the price. http://www.contrabass.co.uk/new_image_22mm_cover.htm
oggiesnr
The advice I was given was not to worry about an expensive gig bag as they all seem to wear in the same places at roughly the same rate (may not be true for the really expensive ones) so I've spent £50 on a Hidersine from Alan Gregory and I'll see how it goes http://www.alangregory.co.uk/music/Three_Quarter_Size_Double_Bass_Cases.html. If I have to replace it every year then that's just part of the costs of a DB. Steve
TheG
Well spotted Geoff! That is very interesting isn't it! I've had a Tom and Will for around 11 months. So far it seems to be holding up. I had a Ritter before that which lasted around 5 or 6 months. Wheels are very useful for when you are going across smooth surfaces.

geoffbassist
Im pretty sure my bass would just fall apart so I try to stick to pavements :-)
paddy109
I have just bought my second tom and will bag - the first one the zip bust after 3+ years. Got a 40% discount on the second and the newer zips are much more robust! So far so good! Good prompt response fron their customer services. sarah thomas
The link that Geoff posted looks remarkably like my case. Loads of handles, reinforced stitching and pockets too. Can't be bad for £140. A couple of the zip pulls have fallen off mine in the last couple of months but the zips still work fine.
artisan
i bought a cheap Gewa bag from Thomann when i ordered my bass one of these http://www.thomann.de/gb/gewa_classic_34_kontrabass_tasche.htm it seems pretty well made for the money, however time will tell

My zip pull on the rear pocket has died. Also one of the zips for the small pocket. The main one is still good and I'm pretty happy with it. Damo200
EVR or OK are the best I've found (though not cheap!) Try Malcolm Healey.
Gareth Hughes
I have this bag: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/2212-SERIES_II_PROFESSIONAL_3_4_AND_4_4_SIZE_UPRIGHT_BASS_BAG.html Using it regularly for at least four years now. No problems with it at all. Only wear and tear on it is on the bottom side near the wheels where I'm lazily dragging it up kerbs, etc rather than lifting it. Had some pretty serious bumps along the way and the case has always done it's job brilliantly.

Owen
The last time my DB bag fell apart I bought a Reunion Blues. This was 23 years ago. It is still virtually as good as new. It cost a lot, but I am guessing I will retire before it does. I cannot speak highly enough of it. Long term it is not expensive.

Owen
I cannot speak for the quality of this, but it looks to be made to the same pattern as my RB bag. http://www.thomann.de/gb/concord_pv502_kontrabasstasche_34.htm
spencer.b
my EVR cost a bloody fortune but it's far and away the best one I've had, mine's done 2 years of hard labour and isn't showing any signs of wear, really soft inside too,the one I had before ended up tearing up the edges of my bass a bit
27 frets
Hi Gedo Musik who sell a lot of basses on eBay also do cases: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Gedo-Online-Musikshop/_i.html?_fsub=7 Though based in Germany, they will respond to email queries in English, and shippnig to UK is prompt. My Gedo bass came with a 'Tim Hendson' branded case, which has been fine, though some of the clips on the shoulder carrying straps have now bent a bit, making them rather insecure. It looks like they have switched to their own brand cases, with the rucksack-type shoulder carrting straps stitched on, and wheels added on some cases - so probably an improvement.
