kevcooke Posted March 30, 2012 Share Posted March 30, 2012 Hi all, I'm off to Malaysia for a week in May for a gig in Kuala Lumpur. Flying out from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur and changing there for a flight to Penang (where we'll be staying and rehearsing) before flying back to Kuala Lumpur for the gig. What are the chances of Malaysia Airlines allowing me to walk on, every time, with my bass in my gig-bag? Or shall I flight-case it and stick it in the hold? Never transported an instrument on them, but always had decent service from the airline, i'd call someone and ask them directly and oraganise something in advance from experience travelling internationally! I think for that kind of flight it's going to work out significantly more expensive to book an extra seat; the feeling I'm starting to get is that the guys paying really rather prefer that I put the bass in the hold instead of having to pay the extra expense. I was at Ferengi Beach & loved the island except for the fact that you couldn't swim in the sea (effluent) but loved the Nonya cuisine - you MUST try that. If you are up at Ferengi, I recommend a restaurant called 'The Atap Leaf' - tell them it was recommended by the first customer they had who finished his Chinese Porrage........street cred indeed.... No matter what you are told on the phone by the airline in advance or what previous experiences are related by other passengers, the ultimate decision on whether you are going to be able to take your bass on board the plane in a gig bag rests with the check-in staff and cabin crew at the time of check-in and/or boarding. In these security-conscious times no amount of persuasion on your part will change their mind and could even get you removed from the flight. You may well be lucky and be able to take your bass on board every flight, but what are you going to do if your told that the only way that your instrument is flying is in the hold and all you have is a gig bag?
