chilievans
Thanks bud. If my height is wrong Would these files work on a brass nut?
I'm not sure about what files to use. Adjusting a nut is something I leave to a luthier. Don't trust myself with it.
Moos3h
Don't use files! Use 'Welding tip cleaners' - available off the bay for about £4 and from hardware shops for less. Perfect for cutting a nut!
discreet
This topic isn't what I thought it was. But for the record, mine are 29" (74cm) from the ground. Edited April 3, 2012 by discreet

The damage done by a slip of a file doesn't bear thinking about
Ou7shined
Okay ..... One you can hear the banging off the machinehead. Two I hope that was the old strings because it looks like they took a hit of the file too. Third at 4 minutes is it just me or is he not holding the feeler guage straight?
check, check and check. And as I mentioned before the file defo hit the fingerboard.

PaulWarning
I find it easier to remove the nut and use emery cloth to rub down the bottom of the nut, and if you go too far shim it with some paper/cardboard, someone will probably come on here now to tell me that's not how you do it, but it is safer, no fret board damge
Mr. Foxen
If the bass is otherwise set up ok, capo/fret the first fret, see how high the string is over the second fret, and it should be about the same over the first fret from the nut. I tend to leave bottom string a bit higher because of wanging it hard to make a big noise.
