Hutton Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Does anyone have any idea of how much it costs to ship a bass to OZ? Anyone done it? Quote
mike257 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Not a bass, but shipped an SVT3 in a rack case to Oz recently, cost about £120 I think. I let the buyer arrange the courier so he could pick out insurance etc he was happy with. Make sure you pack it to survive a nuclear war as it'll get tossed between a few planes and probably see some rough handling. I bubble wrapped it inside the flight case, then surrounded it with foam pieces, bubble wrap and those little polystyrene wotsits so it had a good few inches of packing each side - ended up a LOt bigger than the item so probably bumped the shipping up but got there safe and sound so worth doing. Mr. Foxen Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I shipped a transformer to Aus, basically a solid lump of laminated metal. On the way it was x-rayed (didn't tell them much) and impounded as a possible explosive device (they called for an invoice copy, when I pointed out that there were 4 attached, they told me they were not prepared to go close enough to it to retrieve one) and when it arrived they'd still managed to damage it. Hutton Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 Thanks for the posts chaps. My son is in Melbourne for a year and is looking for bassplaying work. He is really intending to buy a bass there and then sell it before he comes home. I was just wondering if it would be worth sending him out one of his own basses from here. Buying a bass in Melbourne is probably going to be his best bet. Quote
mike257 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I bought my Stingray over there, from Allan's in Adelaide - got a good price at the time (back in 2004) but from what I hear things are pretty steep over there now. Quote
Hutton Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 Conclusion to story - He's bought a G&L Tribute L2500 from Oz eBay. It was practically new and he was able to do a local pickup. All's well that ends well. Quote
Big_Stu Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012
Thanks for the posts chaps. My son is in Melbourne for a year and is looking for bassplaying work.
Years ago I shipped a Vamp head & a Vamp separately; strangely enough to Melbourne. If your son sees a T.Rex tribute with "Marc" playing Vamp amps over there chances are it's him. The buyer arranged FedEx to come for them - and for my part I double boxed both, with about 4" or more of bubble-warp all around. The only "damage" was the mains indicator lamp was missing, but it was in the pics I took when packing, so it must have been loose in the packaging. Quote
TheGreek Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I know that this is resolved now but for future ref it cost me about £80 to send my Warwick Dolphin to Oz - stopped at customs so Tax also had to be paid... Quote
bloke_zero Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Necro thread revival - I've just been asked to quote for shipping my MM Cutlass to Australia, it looks like it's 10cm too long for standard shipping with DHL (max 120) and Pack and Post just quoted me £454.12 - anyone sent a bass down under for less? (Note I say 'bass', smaller packages are easier to send by standard couriers.) Quote
BigRedX Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Would the buyer be OK with you taking the neck off for shipping? That would get the parcel down to a more affordable size. 2 Quote
bloke_zero Posted January 14 Posted January 14 They might be, but then I'd have to cut the flightcase in half! I like the lateral thinking though! 1 Quote

As an added bonus, if you like acoustic guitars, the upstairs of the shop has loads of lovely stuff. I am partial to an Australian Maton acoustic... Quote

My son and his wife are now living and working in Turkiye. However, it’s still great advice for anyone in Melbourne looking to buy a bass.👍 Quote
