pietruszka Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 At last nights gig, I was chatting to our guitarist and we got on the subject of things musicians say. Now, of course, some of them make sense and some of them are just stupid (we thought any way). I personally don't care much for "in the pocket". the way I see it, any good musician will do that any way. My guitarist's one was "he/she has chops!". He just thinks its ridiculous! After all, would you say that about a singer? My personal most hated is the 'eternal quest for tone'. I just think it's nonsense! Tilt your rig 10 degrees either way and the sound changes and you'll have to start again! Of course this is just a bit of light hearted fun and not meant to dig at any one. So come on! What have musicians said over the years that you don't like? Dan p.s The guitarist finished the night off by telling me I was in the 'pocket'. Quote

Jayben Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Bass drum instead of kick. A small thing but can be so confusing in the studio if your drummer is lazy with his vocabulary and just says 'bass'. 'Shred' Quote

paul_5 Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Also - "play some funky bass under it" - generally from guitars who have no idea what 'the funk' is, or where "tha one" might be. Phillistines! Quote

Bilbo Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 He must be good, he plays fretless. Fretless is hard. Quote
AttitudeCastle Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 "He/She plays the bass like a guitar" "Just get a guitar" Or similar phrases. It's a Bass Guitar is it not? Also, when people say "bass is about the groove" so bass solos should be "in the pocket" (not a fan of that one!) etc Most people seem to think a bass should have 6 frets and 2 strings. Some of that is hyperbolic of course Quote
