EssentialTension
Calling songs 'numbers'. It upsets me way more than it should and I don't know why!
It's been around a long time:
A number in music is a self-contained piece that is combined with other such pieces in a performance. In a concert of popular music, for example, the individual songs or pieces performed are often referred to as "numbers." The term is applied also to sections of large vocal works (such as opera, oratorio, or musical) when the written or printed score for such a work designates the titles of the pieces with sequential numbers, hence the aptness of the term. The use of numerical designations in extended vocal musical works has the practical advantage of facilitating rehearsal plans, especially when their designations include assignment of characters. lowdown
I believe the Church also lay claim to 'Numbers' back yonder - Hymns were numbered [still are] Passengers yelling 'Number xx' at William Hartley has a nice 100 year urban Myth touch though. neilb
From the singer: "When's our next gig again? JESUS CHRIST SAKE!!! Get a fricken diary!!! From the guitarist: "Can you sort of play a bit more like sort of bit less type of line, you know, sort of bit more behind the beat more relaxed type sound? No? " Talking guitarist bullshit. From the drummer " Which do you prefer, the old large crash cymbal I had or my new china?" Cant hear a bloody difference and do not care to be honest. From the venue manager " I will turn the Sky off when you start, OK?" Yeah...righto! Agree, not so much musical phrases but annoying anyway. bobpalt
Plays like butter is bad enough, but in the United States in America they always seem to say "plays like buttah". What the **** is buttah??? Also, why are a collective of young men or women who sing simple harmonies on stage called boy/girl "bands"? Surely a band has to play instruments of some kind? Surely a band has to play instruments of some kind?
Off the first online dictionary I could find... band[sup]1[/sup]n 1. a company of people having a common purpose; group a band of outlaws 2. (Music, other) a group of musicians playing either brass and percussion instruments only (brass band) or brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments (concert band or military band) 3. (Music / Pop Music) a group of musicians who play popular music, jazz, etc., often for dancing 4. (Music, other) a group of instrumentalists generally; orchestra So in the musical sense, then no, they're not bands. Always had a bit of a bee in my bonnet about that one too - always call them 'groups' myself.

A scalpel is an Instrument. So i suppose a voice is an Instrument - any Classical singers i have worked with, call their voice and Instrument. It's when people apply some sort of godlike status to the word that annoys me. Truckstop

51m0n
True, but it's VERY rare to be in an orchestra that has percussion including said 'bass' drum AND a drum kit, so it's very rare that such a distinction is needed... Personally, I think you're right though. The drum on a kit should be referred to as a 'kick' drum. Also makes things easier when you're labelling up the PA and/or recording desk because you can have 'bass' and 'kick'... To conclude. Drummers are idiots!
Last gig I saw had a concert band with full kit and orchestral bass drum, and a full set of timps too. The difference in sound is unreal, an orchestral bass drum really desevers the name bass, its 'kin HUGE compared to a namby pamby kick drum, the orchestral drum wasnt even going through the PA, and it dominated the room. Tone, instead of timbre, which is just a 'better' word for it - so there! "Compression kills dynamics" - no it doesnt, not ever, thats like saying "guns kill people" - they dont people (mis)using guns kill people, like people mis-using compressors kills dynamics. Usually stated by people who have absolutely no idea whatsoever about how compressors work, what they sound like, how to really set one up etc etc. Boils my p*** dry in moments. And relax.......
