LukeFRC
That is my idea of hell!!! Theres nothing wrong with the response and tone of old basses!!
It was quite fun trying to work out what your idea of hell would be to be honest... there were a few options but this got it in the end. They probably aren't bad basses- just everyone who wants one ends up doing mark king impersonations.

Don't get me started on my idea of hellish basses, we'd be here forever, and I'd probably offend everyone on here!!

Leon Transaxle
To veer back on to topic (nice though the digression is),,, I have put both covers on my CV 50s P bass and find they are helpful. The pup cover is exactly where I need it when playing with fingers and the bridge cover is ideal to rest my hand when using a pick. Having a smaller gap to pound with a pick forces me to play a bit tidier too (as belting my knuckles on the cover a few times serves as a good tutor) OK, You can't palm mute but I might give the piece of foam under the cover trick a go. Anyway isn't that why you have more than one bass. I can palm mute fine on my P or my Westone. kevin_lindsay
I use the neck pickup cover on my Jazz Basses. The huge bridge cover is not to my preference - doesn't allow for palm muting (as was mentioned earlier), plus the available free string area between installed covers is minimal. Here's a pic of my Custom Shop 1961 Jazz with the neck pickup cover in place: Edited April 21, 2012 by kevin_lindsay
